We had the good fortune of connecting with Betsy Thagard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Betsy, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I love to cook and entertain, and always come up with fun and delicious recipes. During the holidays I would make toffee for family and friends. I chose toffee because it is such a beautiful dessert, and one that is not always the easiest to make-everyone always clamored for more, and expressed that I should share it with the world!
What should our readers know about your business?
First and foremost what sets our brand apart from others is our packaging. Our sleek, sophisticated clear canisters draw the customer to our product. Once that happens, it is the taste and consistency of our toffee that brings them back time and time again. It doesn’t stick to your teeth- it’s very forgiving. We hold the GOLD Award for ‘Top Toffee’ and ‘Best Packaging’ from the Taste Awards in San Francisco. We are so proud of the fact that we work with many high end gift companies and specialty stores, from Bristol Farms to Whole Foods, and we are so honored to design custom gifts for many Fortune 500 companies nationally.
There are many challenges in owning and growing a business, and putting in a great deal of hard work is a must. Doing something I love and that is so rewarding makes it all worth while. We never like to say no to a customer, so we are always creating ways to make things happen and satisfy our customers. A few years back we created a peppermint B. toffee exclusively for Williams Sonoma.
One of our biggest challenges is the inability to donate to everyone’s cause or charity. Because giving back is a large part of what we do, we’ve created our own ‘B. Giving Initiative’ where we can work in conjunction with many charities throughout our community, throughout the year. While we can’t give to everyone, we are so proud to be able to give to those we can!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d start by visiting Lido Marina Village, Newport Beach for breakfast at Malibu Farms. Its right on the water and a perfect place to also do a little shopping and stop for a coffee beforehand at Honor Coffee. For a little workout, we could walk around our beautiful neighborhood, Balboa Island, and at some point stop for the famous frozen bananas from Dad’s!
Lunch or dinner and cocktails would have to be at my favorite spot, Gulfstream, which is close to Fashion Island.
And an absolute must is a Duffy Boat ride around the bay. It is so fun to enjoy all the beautiful homes on the water while sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the gorgeous sunsets.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The people I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to are: My mom, who taught me the love of cooking and entertaining, and who doesn’t let a day go by without telling me how proud of me she is.
My mentor and best friend, my husband who I can bounce anything and everything off of.
Most of all, my team, who I could not do B. toffee without!!
Thank you to my chefs that work hard in the kitchen every day making our delicious product from start to finish, my assistants who are creative, organized and keep me sane, and to my business consultant and mentor who coaches and guides me every day.
