We had the good fortune of connecting with Billi Sarafina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Billi Sarafina, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was always having a lemonade sale and putting on performances for the other kids in my neighborhood and now as an adult I have my Shea Butter line “Body Vibes Beauty” and monologue content creating page “Modern Monologues”. Both previously featured on Voyage LA.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am not exactly where I want to be, but I am definitely not where I used to be. I recently went back to college to acquire a degree so I can become a teacher. No matter how successful I may become I will always want to work with the youth because they are our future. Going back to school running two businesses and a vlog is a lot. Scheduling is everything! I believe in myself so I motivate myself to pull through everyday. I have overcome plenty of challenges, but so have many other people. I tell myself if they can survive so can I! I learn lessons everyday. That’s one of the lessons I’ve learned “You’re never done learning”. Don’t let self-doubt keep you from pursuing your dreams. What I want people to know about my brands is that I did not let self doubt keep me from pursuing my businesses. I still continue to sell and create product even when the sells or views is not where I want them to be because I believe they will one day be. My brands are black woman owned and operated and they are for everyone to enjoy from my shea butter and body scrub to the scripts and monologues I write. I am also a victims advocate and I believing in speaking up and telling your story you never know who you can help. Being authentic is my driving force.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Covid has me so used to home I forgot what outside life is like, but recently I went to a soul food restaurant in Los Angeles called Annies Soul Delicious, and it is fantastic so if you have not eaten there do yourself a favor. Bar hoping in WEHO is always something I would take a visiting friend to do so many different spots and crowds and everyone is welcoming. I love hanging out at at Ikea haha I am so basic and such a home body its unbelievable. I love the Santee Alley and Grand market downtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people I look up to it’s unbelievable! I greatly benefit from anyone whose story involves perseverance. I want to dedicate my shout out to two of my aunts who are doing amazing things. One a successful entrepreneur and philanthropy field and the other in the a respected Social worker whose also in the education field. All things that I am passionate about. They have also both supported me when it comes to film making allowing me to film in their residences which any fellow filmmaker knows is a big deal. Amelia Williamson the Principal and Chief Strategist of AWA Consults is also someone I can turn to when I am in any type of help, and Virgess Way a social worker and mental health advocate is someone I always turn to when I need help accepting reality. They have both taught me that self determination and reimagining your future can help you persevere in life and become successful in many forms.
