We had the good fortune of connecting with Blanca Ocegueda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Blanca, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since I was a child I have always liked the idea of being artistic/creative. Although, I look back now and realize that I had a very narrow outlook on what that could look like. When I thought of being artistic/creative, I thought of singers, musicians, dancers, and fine artists. When I was little I wanted to have an artistic career being a singer. Then I soon found out that I wasn’t as good as I had believed! I soon after gave up on my dream of going about my life being an artistic/creative person. Especially when I constantly grew up hearing that being an artist would never pay the bills, or that I wouldn’t get far. At the time I had a very limited outlook on what having an artistic/creative career could look like. Coming from an immigrant household that was never really an option. It was to get good grades, go to school, and get a secure job. So I did just that, I followed the grocery list of life that society has implemented for us. Once I got the secure job, a couple years in I realized I wasn’t happy. I felt a void, I craved being artistic and expressing my true authentic self. I would still try to paint and do my photography or be expressive within my workplace, but again something was missing. My partner took note and gave me a gentle reminder of my childhood dream; to open up a community center. It was such a magical feeling to be reminded of my wildest dreams, to feel my fire within flare up bright. That was a feeling I missed. After some thought, I took a leap of faith, quit my job, and decided to start up my own business. I consider what I do to be artistic and creative because I am researching and coming up with my own recipes to create my items. I pour so much love and attention into my products. It feels good to use my hands to create something that I love and be able to share that with the world. I took that leap of faith and pursued living artistically and creatively, and that transcended into everything I do. I now feel like I have no limits, I can do and accomplish all that I set forth for myself. I am grateful to have taken that leap of faith and have believed in myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in manufacturing all natural wellness products. I believe that in itself sets me apart from others. My products are made with minimal ingredients that you can pronounce! I’m very proud of myself for being able to perfect the recipes for my items. After many trials and errors I have nailed the recipes for clean and pure items, It has not been an easy ride, my biggest challenge has been the mental portion of this process. No one tells you the mental toll it takes to really break away and break down from the mold and expectations society has cut out for you. It was very hard for me at first to enjoy myself throughout my day without beating myself up saying “I should be doing something instead of resting”. Rest has now become a revolutionary act of self love and self preservation, something that is diminishing little by little due to the fast paced life we now live. It is still a work in progress that gets easier every day. I have learned to choose myself and put myself first.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so many places to visit here in the city! I would take them to eat to DeFranko’s Subs in Van Nuys. We would also try out Mate Conmigo, Mamicons, and Cafe Aficionado in Northridge. Some of my favorite places to visit is, the local breweries such as 818 brewery, Hollywood Artisans Market, Placita Olvera, Griffith park and to my favorite spot, the beach! I also would love to take them to some of the many beautiful hiking trails in the county. I love checking out culture rich areas, those are my favorite places to be in the city!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

So many people have been here throughout this whole process and I am beyond grateful. First and foremost, I want to thank my partner Sergio, for always believing in me when I didn’t and for always encouraging me to be the best version of me. To really go out there and attain all my goals. Most importantly for always loving me and being there when I thought I had no direction, for being my life partner.

To Jessica, boo boo, you’re a real one! Thank you for always being there for me, my words will never be enough to express my love for you! Love you always & forever!

Last but not least, I would like to thank Abby and Reggie from Cafe Aficionado in Northridge for believing in me and opening your heart and space to me. I will forever be grateful for allowing me to set up shop in your cafe, for giving me my start jump. You and Sergio believed in me when I didn’t and encouraged me to excel and be confident in my leap of faith. Thank you!
