We had the good fortune of connecting with Dwayne Savid and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dwayne, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’m a firm believer in no risk no reward. I feel like a lot of people feel like taking a risk is automatically taking a loss but I have a different mindset. I feel any time I’ve taken a risk I’ve always gained something be it a lesson or a blessing. For example taking my first heels class despite being a cismale. That’s STILL a risk to this very day I get told I won’t book if I keep dancing in heels and yet I just did a music video for Iggy Azalea IN MY HEELS.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m not afraid to flow in and out of my feminine and masculine energies in my art. I let the music be my guide and go from there. It definitely wasn’t easy at first. I had to learn how to get out of my own way and stop limiting myself to societies ideals of what my art should look like. I’ve learned you’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok as long as YOU love your art and it’s true to you it’ll read regardless.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ugh! I love love love Roscoe’s Chicken and waffles, Lucy’s and simply wholesome in ladera! I’m LA native so all of those restaurants are tastes of home.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely definitely definitely without a doubt would not be the confident dancer and man I am today without my dance father Jamari Amour aka Jamari Marc Jacobs. He took me under his wing when I first started dancing in heels back in 2016. Jamari showed me I could be whatever I wanted to be when I wanted to be it because I MAKE THE RULES. I’ll forever be grateful to him and carry the lessons I’ve learned from him everyday in my career & life honestly.
