We had the good fortune of connecting with Blas Fernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Blas, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk taking has always played a huge role in my life and career. Prior to me taking the risk of quitting my job and going full time as a real estate agent, I used to religiously play poker and risk my money all the time. However, I was never willing to take a risk and gamble on myself. I had no problem risking my money but for some reason betting on myself wasn’t an option, I didn’t have the heart nor belief to do it. All that changed January 18th 2020. This is the day I took the biggest risk of my life. I had one child and another one on the way and I finally decided to quit my job and pursue my dreams of becoming a commercial real estate agent. It’s the best decision I ever made in my life. I look back and wish I had done this a lot sooner. Taking this risk has allowed me to be financially free, work with successful investors and corporations and bought my family our dream home this year in June 2022. I also started my own real estate team (Blas Property Group) January 1st 2021, since then we’ve grown to a team of four people and remained top five teams in the company. My advise to anyone that is on the fence on quitting and pursuing your dream. Go for it. If you don’t, someone else will and you will end up working for them.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is real estate. My team and I specialize in commercial and residential real estate. I believe the one thing that sets my team apart from others is how we are essentially a one stop shop. We can service a first time home buyer or service an investor with a large portfolio. We are extremely active and focus most of our energy in inventory, that’s our main goal and focus. Getting here certainly wasn’t easy, in fact it was extremely hard and very competitive. I think there’s a big misconception about making it in real estate, people think it’s easy because most of the time agents display the “just sold!” sign and big commission check. But no one ever highlights the process and the grind that real estate agents go through on a daily basis, there’s so many downs in this business but we tend to only shed light when something sells. The biggest lesson I’ve learned in this business is to stay focused and stay structured. It’s very easy to get distracted when you don’t have a boss or a clock in sheet, having structure in this business is extremely important to your success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a HUGE foodie, I think most of my commission checks are spent on restaurants when I’m not spoiling my wife and kids. I would definitely start my day with a nice hike at Escondido Falls in Malibu. After our hike I would walk down to Malibu seafood fish market for the best fried/fresh seafood and clam chowder for lunch, it’s the best in town. After lunch I would get ready for the best Italian restaurant in town Giorgio Baldi also in Malibu, there’s no better authentic Italian food in LA. For my wine lovers, I would highly recommend taking a trip down to wine county, Los Olivos about half hour away from Santa Barbara. Fess Parker is one of my favorite wineries out there, great wine, vibes and views.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank my very first mentor Ted Morgan, Ted taught a lot about sales, discipline and how to build sales teams. My older brother David also played a role in my success, he was very instrumental in helping me with structure and keeping my head on track. One book that really helped me was “winning” by Tim Grover. It’s a very intense book but I felt like it was perfectly designed for me.
