Meet Bluesky Lan | Director & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bluesky Lan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bluesky, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
One of the toughest decisions I face as a director is casting actors. It’s not just about finding talent but about balancing different perspectives. I am focus on performance and artistic vision to ensure the actor fully embodies the character, while producers consider budget, marketability, and logistics to keep the project feasible. At the same time, clients may have their own branding or commercial preferences, which don’t always align with the director’s vision. Finding the right balance can be challenging, but I’ve learned that communication, flexibility, and a clear artistic vision are essential. Casting isn’t just about skill—it’s about choosing the best fit for the project while keeping everyone aligned.

What should our readers know about your business?
Filmmaking is incredibly difficult, and my journey was no exception. When I first started, I knew nothing. After graduating from New York Film Academy, I struggled to find a job in the industry.
Instead of giving up, I decided to learn on set. I worked in various crew positions—as a background actor, Grip, PA, and almost every role in a production. Each experience taught me something new about filmmaking. Slowly, I became a cinematographer, then a director, and eventually found my path in the industry.
What truly changed my career was the rise of vertical short dramas. This format gave me the opportunity to create, experiment, and connect with global audiences. Platforms like Shortmax allowed me to showcase my work.
Another important lesson I’ve learned is that social connections matter in this industry. Filmmaking is a collaborative process, and every action is noticed. That’s why on set, it’s essential to be responsible, hardworking, and professional. People remember those who take their work seriously, and building strong relationships opens up more opportunities.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I would take them to my film set and let them experience a real production firsthand. Filmmaking is a fascinating, fast-paced process, and I’d love for them to see what goes on behind the scenes—from directing and lighting to working with actors and the crew. They would get to watch a live shoot, interact with the team, and even step in as an extra or assistant for the day. It’s an experience that most people don’t get to see up close, and it would definitely be unforgettable. Outside of the studio, I’d take them to explore some of the best film-related spots in Los Angeles, like: Warner Bros. Studio Tour – A behind-the-scenes look at iconic film sets.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of many incredible people.
First and foremost, I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my parents. Their unwavering love, support, and belief in me have been the foundation of my journey. They have always encouraged me to pursue my passion for filmmaking, even when the road was uncertain.
Secondly, From cinematographers who bring the visual world to life with stunning compositions and lighting, to editors who shape the story in post-production, ensuring every frame flows seamlessly—each role is essential. Production designers create immersive environments that enhance storytelling, while sound designers and composers add depth and emotion to every scene. Assistant directors and production assistants keep everything running smoothly on set, ensuring that the team stays on schedule and focused. Actors are at the heart of every film, embodying characters with depth and authenticity, while costume designers, makeup artists, and set decorators help transform them into their roles. Even behind the scenes, producers, script supervisors, and grips work tirelessly to keep the production moving forward.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge aspiring filmmakers and storytellers who are working hard to make their mark in the industry. This field isn’t easy, but every great filmmaker starts with a passion for storytelling. I hope to inspire and support others as I continue my own journey.
Filmmaking is never a solo effort—it’s a team-driven art form, and I deeply appreciate every talented individual I’ve had the privilege to work with. Their hard work, creativity, and dedication bring every project to life, turning ideas into powerful stories that resonate with audiences.
