We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Garibay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, what makes you happy? Why?
In the simplest terms, my life makes me happy! I have a wonderful husband who supports my dreams and ambitions. I have dogs who love me unconditionally and I get to enjoy lots of wine with the “California family” I call my best friends. My biological family lives out of state and I don’t get to see them as often as I would like, but I like to surround myself with my favorite people (and dogs) and try enjoy the here and now of each moment that life gives us. I have learned that tomorrow is never a guarantee so I try to live each day with a grateful and positive attitude, and of course a glass of wine! I believe happiness comes from within and I do my best to radiate it out to share the joy with everyone while I can!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Outside of my wine business life, I have been in the professional beauty industry for over 25 years as an Event Producer / Director. Over that course of time, I have had the opportunity to travel extensively eat great food and drink lots of wonderful wine with some of the most interesting people! I have produced beautiful and inspiring shows for thousands of people and have had some career highlights including having some major rocks stars play at my shows! Blondie in 2014 and Sixx:A.M. in 2017, very cool people! I have been fortunate to have my career, because being a Producer has allowed me to be creative while also teaching me the disciplines of a corporate structure. That helped me when I started the wine business for sure. In addition to my wine business, I still hold my corporate position and still love producing live events! 2020 was obviously tough since all live events were non-existent, but I do hope we can get back to being together later this year! Finding my work/ life balance has been tough the last few years, but since life as we knew it has changed, so has my outlook on things. Each day brings a new beginning to be focused on what’s important for the day. And I find that is being grateful and feeling blessed for everything you need to do that day. Whether it’s working on a presentation, making dinner, feeding the dogs or enjoying a glass of wine…being grateful that I am still here to do those things, because so many are not! You just have to keep things in perspective. We all have limited time here…enjoy it while you can, no matter what you have to do! And that’s how I stay motivated to keep Nectar of The Dogs Wine going. It’s not easy, but my passion for dogs and wine keeps me inspired. I know what I am doing for this business is from my heart to honor my fur-angels, and to help dogs in need. I want dog and wine lovers to know that when they drink our wine, they are drinking great wine for a great cause!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, once we get back to normal… Mexican food: El Compadre / Hollywood been going there for years…love it! Mastro’s in Malibu: Love the view, love the food, love the wine! Rainbow (and other bars) on Sunset Strip: because you have to if you are a tourist…The Penthouse at The Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica: Beautiful view, great brunch. Tao Hollywood: Just because. Venice Beach: Who doesn’t like to people watch? My backyard in Granada Hills: because it has a spectacular view overlooking LA and I am a great cook and have lots of wine to choose from at home!!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Todd Sobleski, my biggest fan, my greatest support, my soul mate and a great “dog dad”. Without him, I definitely would not be where I am today, period!! My “California family”, Keith & Kristina Gray and Mark & Monica Pontrelli. They have been right there from the beginning of my wine business journey, cheering me on and of course, helping me drink great wine along the way. My wine mentors: Mike & Debby Giovinazzo, Mike & Chris Brown, John &Lisa Shaw and Megan McGrath Gates. These friends inspired me to take my love of wine and turn it into a small business. They still inspire me to keep going, no matter where the journey takes me.
