We had the good fortune of connecting with Bom Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bom, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think of risk as another way to get a chance of winning. In my view, taking on the opportunity to do music at all was a big risk for me. However, the potential that I saw in a music career far outweighed any losses that I might incur along the way. Risk taking is also a part of my spiritual journey as a Christian. God invites all of us to take the risk of jumping into His arms and inviting us to His Kingdom, But until we jump, there is no way to know whether He will really be there to catch us. Ever since I made the leap, I have come to realize that that first jump was merely the first of many. My life is a composite of risks taken, leaps jumped, and faith rewarded. Risk taking is, in essence, an critical part of who I am whereby I see again and again the faithfulness of Him who calls for my trust in Him.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a reflection of the stories which make up my life. It reveals my character. My stories and my voice are unique. I don’t pretend to be someone else. We live within a sea of people trying to be someone else although they don’t really have to. I have learned over the years the value of staying true to myself and who I am. There is great risk in maintaining this level of genuineness. I have had to face sleepless nights wrestling with financial concerns and fear of failure. It would have been really easy to take up someone else’s story as my own. Perhaps it would have been more attractive to others in the moment. But ultimately, I have been able to find peace in my stories and my character. Fortunately, no one shares my stories exactly and that is my selling point, the secret to my will to keep going.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
No doubt, the place I take my close friends looking for a good time out on the town is Quarters Korean BBQ in the heart of Koreatown, Los Angeles. In addition to the incredible food, which is consistently top quality, the vibe is on point. The mood is such that it fits any occasion, whether it is an intimate date or a family dinner or a hangout with a group of close friends. I’ve also seen my fair share of celebrities visiting this establishment, such as John Legend and an assortment of KPOP stars.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are too many people, frankly, I would have to shout out. There are so many people who saw value and potential in me at a time when I didn’t and subsequently helped me to recognize it myself. Ultimately, through these people and their encouragement I was able to open my eyes to all the reasons I had to be thankful. They, knowingly or unknowingly, restored to me the will to continue living. These people include my fellow musician friends and audio engineers and my Church family and my family back in Atlanta.
