Meet Boy Bowser | Transmasc Hiphop Artist based in Southern California

We had the good fortune of connecting with Boy Bowser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Boy Bowser, what do you attribute your success to?
I think the most important factor about my success is my authenticity. As a trans man who makes music, for a long time I struggled with a lot of feelings of self-doubt. There wasn’t much representation for people like me in the music industry, especially not in hip-hop, and it was scary to take those first few steps. But now, I embrace my differences and my identity, and I hope my listeners are drawn not just to my trans-ness, but also my message of being authentic and true to yourself. The self is something that should be celebrated and I try to convey that message in my songs as much as possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a transmasc hip hop musician by the name of Boy Bowser! I’m based in Orange County, California and my goal is to make fun, energetic music for my community! Growing up, I never saw much representation for someone like me, and I wanted to make waves in the music industry as the first successful transmasc rapper! It has taken a lot of effort on my part as an independent artist, but I believe in my music and my message and that authenticity is the reason I have the audience I have now! The thing I try to keep in mind the most as I grow as an artist is community outreach, I’ve done tons of free shows with pride organizations, non-profits, and fundraising campaigns because I want to be able to aid the people in my community with my music in any way I can, and showing up and showing out is my specialty! I want my music to make trans people feel confident about themselves, that they’re allowed to take up space and be as boisterous and rowdy as possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some favorite spots around Orange County have to be going down to Laguna Beach to get some ice cream and peruse all the amazing art galleries and markets they have down by the beach, as well as all the shops in Downtown Fullerton! They have plenty of open mics in the area, and I love doing impromptu performances around town and hearing other musicians too!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicated my shoutout to Trans Dudes of LA! They’re an organization made by two trans men (Mich and Adam), who created the insanely popular T-Boy Wrestling! I participated in their 2nd ever T-Boy Wrestling and have been involved since. They do amazing work bringing amazing events to our community, and I could not be more proud of both of them for everything they’ve accomplished.
