We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Benson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandi, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think calculated risk is necessary. We are oftentimes scared of the unknown, but we can use this fear to guide us and fuel us if we embrace it correctly. I’ve taken many risks in my life, but they have all been precalculated. I am a very motivated person, and I know I will never allow myself to give up. The most significant risk I have taken was opening up to the world my story of having a rare and aggressive cancer called Ewing Sarcoma.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am the founder and CEO of Resume-Advantage, an employment service for both civilians and transitioning military veterans. I’ve earned a B.A. in Mass Communications and Journalism from Ashford University and an M.F.A. in Writing from the Savannah College of Art and Design. I am currently pursuing a Human Resource certification from Cornell University.
I am an American speaker and storyteller for TLC Lions, an author of The Enemy Inside Me, a brand ambassador for the Sarcoma Alliance, and an Iraqi War Veteran.
In 2009, after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Ewing Sarcoma, I fought to overcome my diagnosis, heal after my treatments, and reclaimed my life through therapy, physical activities, and other healthy-living practices.
Through my speaking engagements and signature topic “Overcoming The Enemy Inside You” culled from the title of my acclaimed book, I transforms the lives of her audience by encouraging them to pursue different avenues of physical and mental therapy to take charge of their healing and wellness.
I have had the pleasure of working with SNOW Companies, Bristol Myers Squibb, Kevin Hines, HOPE Nation, The Hines Foundation, LSP3, Salesforce and many more.
My mission is to provide an effective blueprint of strategies and resources that survivors, their loved ones and anyone struggling with “an enemy” in whatever form, take charge of their healing and wellness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to have a great time by doing things outdoors and involving exercise and creativity. So I would suggest a few gym sessions, yoga classes, a few massage sessions as well. Maybe some rock climbing. I would recommend a lovely low-key beach. A vegan spot to eat. It would be great to find a studio to do some painting or somewhere where we can do arts and crafts. t.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout-out to Margaret Hines and Kevin Hines for allowing me to share my story with the world . I want to thank my mom, sister, and fiance for constantly pushing me past my comfort zones. And I want to thank myself for listening and surrounding myself with fabulous people that love and support me.
