We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Milne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my successes is authenticity. All that I do in art or my career comes straight from my heart. I do my very best, I work very hard and ultimately, what I put out IS my authentic heart. So if what I do isn’t a “success” in other people’s eyes ~ regardless, it’s a success to me and I know I can trust it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art journey over the last 20 plus years has been a dream come true. As a kid growing up I always gravitated to art and story telling. I had little belief that I could become a professional artist out in the world as I had nearly no support or encouragement to make art my life. Art isn’t easy, it’s not linear, there’s no set path to follow to ensure stability or certainty ~ at all. It’s hard and beyond time consuming, it can get lonesome, frightening – public opinions can be brutal and stab you right in ALL of your insecurities. Inspiration can be so illusive and leave you empty and alone for so long as if you’re being punished! I’ve def had struggles, rejections and hardships along the way in the personal as well as professional realm. And yet… it’s been absolute magic. My art is my world. It’s my voice. It’s my truth. My story. My passion. My LOVE. If I hadn’t had the willingness to be vulnerable and put my art out into the world, if I hadn’t worked hard, been dedicated and learned from the set backs ~ if I had given up at any sad, frightening, or difficult moment, I would’ve been giving up on who I am in my core. Art called me and I will be responding to the best of my ability as long as I live.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes! I’d like to shout out to the one person who has encouraged my art and career AND authenticity since before I even considered myself an artist – that is my beautiful husband Richard. He is responsible for encouraging me to show my work publicly when I had little confidence and was doing art alone, unseen, for myself. He is my constant support and encourager, and I know that I would still be unseen if it weren’t for him. Also, I’d love to shout out to my home gallery – Corey Helford Gallery (Los Angeles!) that has been a HUGE support for 15 years now!! We’ll be celebrating their 15 Year Anniversary with a GIANT amazing group exhibition in April 2021!!
