We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Overton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandi, why did you pursue a creative career?
Total fluke! My husband at the time had a friend whose wife did designer cookies. I was looking for a little extra cash, as I was a stay-at-home mom at the time and she was looking for help delivering her orders. I was her delivery driver. Little did I know, I had an artistic hand and eye for the same thing. That’s where it all started!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a custom cookie designer/ artist. I love having the freedom to create what comes to mind as I go. My customers like to call it “run with the design!” I enjoy painting on the cookies rather than using all icing as it gives the cookies a more realistic look.
Getting into the cookie world was literally just thrown into my lap. Little did I know, I was actually good at it. I started small, with a few basic cookie cutters, watched A LOT of YouTube videos and practiced with my friend as she completed her orders. As I progressed, her life was taking a huge turn in her career and she was moving out of state. She asked me to take over her clients and within a couple of months, I had a full blown cookie business! Incorporating the cookies into my already crazy life was a learning curve. Being a stay-at-home mom of 5 kids is no easy task. And designing cookies can come with many sleepless nights. Figuring out how to fit this new business into my life took a toll on me physically and mentally until I got the groove. But I think this is the story with all entrepreneurs. It takes time, sweat, tears and dedication, but if you stick to it, it’s so worth it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend and I enjoy a strong drink, tasty food, good music and a belly laugh! We like finding new restaurants to try, comedy, and somewhere we can show off our newest sexy outfit! So if that means we’re going to Kalaveras for fajitas and a shot of tequila, a night club, or a drag show, we’re all for it!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
