We had the good fortune of connecting with Bree ‘Mei-Li’ Preuitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bree ‘Mei-Li’, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?

It’s my everyday decision to be curious about my fears instead of being afraid of them. I found that my fears have been the biggest motivator for living the life I live now. The decision to not be debilitated led me into places like improv and acting. Whenever I feel that anxious pit in my stomach I tell myself, “Oh! I need to do this because I am going to feel so empowered afterward”’. Fear has led me to start a career in the performing arts and now transition into the world of business as a business owner for The Polaris Group, a digital media holding company. Every day I experience waves of Imposter Syndrome but my true success lies in affirming that ‘if my desire is there, I am always qualified’. The whole point of life is to experience and learn from it. So if I can conquer the little demons in my head, nothing the world can throw at me will have power over me. Always remaining curious, especially when it comes to my fears, has been the key to unlocking new levels of success within every aspect of my life.

What should our readers know about your business?

The Polaris Group is a black-owned digital media holding company that prides itself at the foremost of bringing authentic content to the world. We have 4 mission-driven entities that fall under our organization which include our podcasting network The Polaris Network, our news division Polaris News, our film distribution arm Polaris TV, and the production company Slauson Hills Entertainment. The whole vision behind this inception was taking the front seat of being the driving force on what type of content I wanted to be reflected in the world. This has been my first time taking myself seriously as a business owner and it has been quite a challenging experience I still don’t have it all figured out. As a first-time business owner, the doubts are loud but always bringing the focus back to the bigger picture keeps me motivated to keep going. Having a strong ‘why’ allows me to feel confident in this new terrain I have stepped in. Also, I want to give a shout-out to my business partner Ryan Aubrey. Having someone you trust 100% and can be real with is an absolute necessity in this business world. I honestly don’t know if I could have made it this far without his particular eye and attention to detail. Thank you for pushing me to be better. Here are your flowers king lol!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I’m going to put my city Oxnard, the strawberry capital of California, on the map for this one! It is a coastal city, about 45 minutes North of Los Angeles. If you have a deep love for the ocean like me, you’re going to love it here! Toppers Pizza is a MUST when you visit! Whenever the Strawberry Festival comes back, try E V E R Y T H I N G. It is all delicious, no lie. Hitting up the farmer’s markets on the weekends is a must including Sundays in Channel Islands and Saturdays at The Collection. SushiWay is one of my new favorite spots for drinks. And for Italian food, Dominick’s Italian Restaurant on Oxnard Blvd is another great spot too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

The entire black community is my shoutout – I love my people! All my life’s work is amplifying the voice of under-represented voices within the realm of media and entertainment. I currently work part-time for HBCU in LA which places HBCU students in jobs within the entertainment industry. My life’s vision is to have more black people in these vital, decision-making roles within these large media entities or to create more of our own black-owned and black ran platforms. More diversity at the top allows for the whole trajectory of how black people are perceived to change because we have the power to control and protect our narratives. Media is the most influential thing in society and its power can be used for immense good. Consequentially, if you look at the etymology it has roots in the word Medea – the Greek Goddess of illusions. The media has been manipulating people with harmful information since its inception which has been exposed time and time again and I am here to change that for good! Black people are a force to be reckoned with and we deserve to see ourselves accurately depicted as multifaceted human beings. Greatness runs in our blood.
