We had the good fortune of connecting with Brendan Dillon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brendan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I would not be where I am in life without risk taking. Previous to going out on my own and starting my life in the creative industry I was working for a Structural Engineering firm for 6 years where I was receiving a great steady income. When I told my mother who is an accountant she was reluctant for me to give up a steady full time job for the unknown. My itch for creativity and freedom to explore and express my own personality through digital media was too great of a calling to ignore and I made the leap back in 2017.

My first international assignment was to Bali, I had worked out I would break even if not loose on this job. With the possibilities at the forefront of my mind and eager to throw myself into the deep end I packed my bags and set out for what I knew very little about. I was scheduled to be in Bali for 10 days shooting for a self tanning label. 3 Days into the shoot I had already blown my budget and was starting to think this was not a great decision. When I landed back in Melbourne and started to produce the work for my client they were so impressed how I went above and beyond to overdeliver I became their head creative for the whole brand. This risk and jump launched my career and saw me get exposer in Australia, United Kingdom and here in the USA. I worked for the brand for over 3 years when I decided to step away to focus my time on new and exciting projects here in Los Angeles.

Without throwing myself into these situations and conquering the financial limitations and fear I would not be where I am today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Nothing worth having comes easy. I started my business in Australia and since falling in love with my now wife in Los Angeles migrating my business overseas had many challenges and is still proving stressful. Challenges and problem solving is what I live for and pride my business on. My scope of work is mainly in D2C (Direct to consumer) consumables within the beauty space. This provides a marketing challenge of ‘How to sell’ this product and to explore the phycology of what makes people buy a specific item.

I was fortunate enough to spend 2 days with the Facebook Creative Department and their Headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. There I learnt the ins and out of data metrics and best practices of creating ads. I strongly believe it’s this drive to sell my clients product and diving deep into these challenge areas is what catapulted my career to the point it is today. End of the day is my clients engage me to create assets to best sell their products and it’s my attention to details and concepts that best achieve this. My brand is still growing however these metrics will always be at the forefront of everything I do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Firstly I’d like start by saying I like Los Angeles, but I LOVE California. I would start by taking them to EP&LP which is my favourite rooftop bar in West Hollywood located on the iconic Melrose Ave. Next we’d head down to Santa Monica where I’d show them the pier and hire some bikes to ride the boardwalk.

After doing the standard ‘touristy’ things of Los Angeles I’d show them the true LA, or should I say California.
Would start with a road trip hitting all my favourite places.
1. Malibu – Drive the canyons through to Malibu and surf some waves.
2. Santa Barbara – Get fresh uni on the jetty and enjoy the beautiful coastal town.
3. Big Sur – Beautiful Drive / McWay falls
4. San Fransisco – I love this city and how easy it is to explore. Hire some bikes and ride around
5. Yosemite – My favourite place in the world
6. Death Valley – Luna Landscapes

This little loop highlights to me a fraction of what California has to offer and gets you out of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and into the true beauty of nature.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Firstly I’d like to say I have had nothing but support from the beginning of my journey and there are too many people to thank. One person deserves a special mention as I would not be here without them, Loren Arthur. Loren was the Head of Digital marketing at the first brand I worked for. She played a huge role in securing me ongoing work across multiple brands. We still work together today launching a new Biotech Skincare Brand, developing the entire brand from ground up. In the creative industry I strongly believe trust and transparency are extremely important and these key factors are what makes our working relationship so great.

I could not go without mentioning both my family back in Australia for all their support and of course my Wife Bailey. She has been by my side for the journey and holds the ship together while I am overseas on assignments. There have been times where I’ve been in a pinch and she has stepped in to help with various aspects of a shoot. From being the lighting assistant in San Diego to even being a hand model in some product shots.

The support and belief from friends here in Los Angeles has been incredible and meeting such amazing people within the industry is what makes it so rewarding. Special thank you must go toward a good friend of mine David Higgs who is one of the most incredible and talented fashion photographers here in Los Angeles. He brought me under his wing to say when I first moved to LA and we have always looked out for each other. It’s relationships like this I really need to be grateful for and pay homage to.
