We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Chanthavong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Coming from a 1st Generation Laotian family, all we were taught from our parents was to go to school, get a good education and get a good job. Although that sounded like a good plan, I wanted more and I was ready to break away from the traditional course of what my parents expectations were of being successful in life. I decided to embark on the journey of starting my own business within the automotive repair industry. My aim was straightforward: to establish an automotive repair shop that stood out for its honesty, transparency, and commitment to quality service.

In recognizing the prevalent negative perceptions surrounding the automotive repair field, I saw an opportunity to make a difference. I understood the need for a repair facility that prioritized integrity above all else, where customers could trust the work being done on their vehicles without hesitation.

Throughout the process, I carefully considered the importance of building trust with our clientele. I knew that delivering consistently high-quality repairs was paramount to upholding our reputation. Transparency became the cornerstone of our operations, ensuring that every customer felt informed and empowered throughout their experience with us.

At key decision points, I made deliberate choices to uphold our values. Prioritizing honesty and transparency in every customer interaction was non-negotiable. Investing in ongoing training for myself and my team was essential to guaranteeing top-tier service. Creating a welcoming environment where customers felt respected and valued was a fundamental aspect of our approach.

As we progressed, I continuously reflected on ways to improve and adapt. Feedback from our customers helped shape our services, ensuring that we met their evolving needs and expectations. Despite challenges along the way, our commitment to our mission remained unwavering.

Today, our business stands as a beacon of integrity and excellence within the community. Moving forward, my focus is on refining our services and expanding our reach, with the goal of positively impacting even more customers.

Much like a guiding light piercing through a dark tunnel, I envision our business illuminating the automotive repair industry, dispelling shadows of distrust with the radiance of honesty and quality craftsmanship.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

It all started in the backyard of my childhood home in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Surrounded by cars of my own and cars of friends, I had a crazy interest in modifying cars since freshman year of high school. I began tinkering with engines and learning the ins and outs of automotive mechanics. Those early days were filled with a lot of street racing all throughout southern california, blowing up engines, rebuilding them back, and doing it all over again alongside my friends. Oh, not to forget, some evading from the police when they showed up uninvited. (I’m sorry mom.)

Despite the chaos, my mom saw potential in my skills and encouraged me to pursue further education. I enrolled in a trade school where I honed my craft and graduated to begin my career as an automotive technician. However, my first job in this field was at a Automotive Dealership in Anaheim Hills where the pay wasn’t so great and the thought of continuously doing the type of work I was outlined to do was not very thrilling. I was beginning to regret the career path I had chosen.

Frustrated by the lack of recognition and opportunities for advancement, I kept my head down and continued to work tirelessly. My mom’s words echoed in my mind, urging me to persevere through adversity and not to give up so easily. After a year of feeling undervalued, I took a chance and sent my resume out to various dealerships, one was to Santa Monica Acura, where I found better pay, growth opportunities, and invaluable training that shaped me into the technician I am today.

From there, I continued to build my value by expanding my knowledge and skills but also constantly seeking new challenges and higher pay. It wasn’t until I landed a position at a Honda dealership in Torrance that I truly began to showcase my work. Recognized for my skills and expertise of being one of the top performing technicians, I was soon appointed as the youngest Shop Team Leader, a testament to my dedication and determination.

But my thirst for challenge didn’t stop there. Despite my background primarily in Japanese vehicles, I yearned for something more. More where an automotive dealership would respect my work/life balance. I began to send my resume through Indeed.com and Jaguar Land Rover of Newport Beach offered the perfect opportunity—a chance to expand my expertise and experience a new world of automotive engineering while allowing me to have a more traditional work schedule of 8-5 with weekends off. Thrilled just by the easygoing schedule, I was more motivated than ever before. Within a year, I rose to the rank of Level 3 technician, a testament to my ability to adapt and excel in any environment.

As I continued to network and build connections within the industry, opportunities began to pour in from prestigious brands like Lamborghini, McLaren and Jaguar Land Rover Track Team where I’d travel across the country and diagnose issues with the race vehicles trackside. While tempting, I knew deep down that I wanted more than just a job—I wanted to build my own legacy. And so, fueled by passion and ambition, I took the leap of faith to start BC Motorworx.

Today, BC Motorworx is not just a business—it’s a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Working tirelessly, sometimes in the middle of the night, I pour my heart and soul into every vehicle, determined to build a reputation that speaks for itself. And looking back on the journey, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again, because every challenge has been a stepping stone toward realizing my dreams.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

When it comes to finding a good spot to chill, Orange County, Newport Beach or Costa Mesa’s area is my go-to spot with my friends. Day drinking at some Cantinas, with good food, cracking jokes and beach vibes along the California Coast, that’s always a good time!

But nowadays, the best vibes with good friends are about meaningful connections. While the allure of bustling nightlife may have once held appeal, we’ve come to value the depth of our relationships. Engaging in profound discussions about life’s intricacies, aspirations, and strategic decisions has become our preferred pastime. It’s through these conversations that we exchange insights, challenge each other’s perspectives, and foster personal growth. It truly is inspiring to watch us speak these things into existence!

As the years have passed, I’ve come to realize the significance of cultivating genuine friendships. Quantity pales in comparison to the quality of companionship offered by a select few. Those who consistently uplift, encourage, and offer unwavering support in my endeavors are the ones I prefer to surround myself with. These connections are the cornerstone of my happiness, providing a sense of fulfillment and purpose in any setting, regardless of time or place.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

There have been so many incredible individuals who have played pivotal roles in my journey and deserve recognition for my drive and success.

First and foremost, I owe an immense debt of gratitude to the strongest woman I know, my beloved mother, Stephanie Chanthavong. Her unwavering courage and perseverance have been a guiding light for me. From the very outset of my career, she has been my rock, urging me to persevere even in the face of adversity. Every single day, I pushed myself with her in my thoughts, fueled by the sole desire to bring a smile to her face.

When I unveiled my plans to open my own automotive repair shop in May 2021, the sheer excitement and joy that lit up my mother’s face were indescribable. Witnessing her happiness was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life. Despite her long battle with cancer, she was able to witness the beginning of my journey and the realization of my dreams. I cherish every memory and moment shared with her, and I am eternally grateful for her unwavering support and love.

Though she is no longer with us, her spirit and legacy continue to inspire me every day. I love you and miss you very much roomie!

There’s another individual who I absolutely must recognize for her incredible support and unwavering presence throughout this journey – my amazing, beautiful and intelligent wife, Clarissa Chanthavong! She’s been by my side through every twist and turn, experiencing every emotion alongside me. Clarissa is the only person I’ve ever shared my business plans, growth strategies, and goals with as she is a part of any and every decision I make within our company. She just so happens to also be the boss in my life!

Her role in the success of our business cannot be overstated. Clarissa’s unconditional support and belief in me have been a driving force behind our achievements. Whether in times of triumph or challenge, she has stood right beside me, never wavering in her encouragement.

I am extremely grateful to have such an extraordinary and inspirational partner in life. Clarissa, your love, and unwavering support mean everything to me. Thank you for being my rock and my constant source of strength.
