We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Shafa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, what do you attribute your success to?
As a plastic surgeon, I have always recognized the importance of my name as my brand and have been very protective of it. I have always taken care to be selective in my patient selection to make sure that I work with patients that I know I can help. I never try to upsell patients on unnecessary costs or procedures or do anything that would break the trust they have in me. From my first day in practice I have worked hard to gain patients’ trust and admiration and continue to this day to work to earn their trust and respect each time I see them. There is unfortunately a great deal of unscrupulous behavior in my industry, and many surgeons seem to make decisions based on money, but I have always strived to stay above that. I have actively talked patients out of unnecessary procedures or products if I don’t believe it would objectively help them.

I believe strongly in organic growth based on word of mouth and the strength of my reputation and results. By avoiding gimmicks and easy cash-grabs, I know that my patients will trust my decision-making when the time comes for me to offer my opinions on their care.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have allowed my plastic surgery practice to grow through natural, organic, word-of-mouth growth. The first year was very slow as I was building my name and reputation, but as my brand grew and my patients proudly showed off their results, my brand continued to grow on its own. I have merged the newest technologies and classic surgical techniques to develop the most advanced surgical combination procedures available that result in completely natural results. I am fortunate that current beauty trends have evolved to match my aesthetic goals with natural results being preferred by the vast majority of my patients. Growth was not easy at the beginning, but has certainly snow balled over the last couple of years to the point that I have been able to expand to multiple offices in multiple locations and am opening a brand new luxury office in Beverly Hills.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Before proposing to my wife, I made sure that she was comfortable with the idea of moving to Los Angeles after the completion of our medical training. We visited LA many times during the years leading up to our final move so that I would be able to show her the city that I have always cherished. I made sure to show her the sunset strip, the golden triangle, Venice, and Malibu. Today, whenever out of town friends visit, we make sure to take them to our favorite spots. Brunch at SOHO House Malibu, Dinner in Hollywood or Koreatown, shopping in Beverly Hills or Century City, etc. I try to show off as much of the city as possible because LA is so vast and so exciting.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Golsa has been my rock of stability throughout my career. She has been with me through the arduous and difficult years of training and has remained as my source of strength throughout my practice. She is a brilliant physician in her own right and can provide guidance and support both clinically and emotionally. Without her encouragement, love, and support, I could imagine the stresses of surgery would take their toll.
