We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Sicurella and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
“I pursued an artistic career because it provided me with a creative outlet and a means to express myself, especially during a challenging time when I was unhoused.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey to where I am today as a photographer has been marked by significant challenges, including struggles with drug addiction and alcoholism. These obstacles were daunting, but with the support of several non-profit organizations, I was able to find the strength and resources needed to overcome them. These organizations provided me with crucial guidance, counseling, and community support that enabled me to break free from destructive habits and rebuild my life.
Through their assistance, I not only gained sobriety but also discovered my passion for photography. It became a therapeutic outlet for me, allowing me to express myself creatively and find beauty in the world around me. As I honed my skills behind the lens, I found a sense of purpose and fulfillment that had been missing from my life.
Today, I am grateful for the invaluable support I received from these non-profit organizations, as they played a pivotal role in helping me transform my life and pursue my passion for photography. Their assistance not only empowered me to overcome personal challenges but also inspired me to give back to others in need.
As a street photographer based in Lynwood, fostering a supportive environment for photographers of all experience levels is essential to me. Through my photography group, I aim to create a space where individuals can share their passion for photography without fear of judgment. Whether someone is just starting out or has been capturing images for years, their perspective and creativity are valued. It’s about celebrating the diverse perspectives and stories that each photograph holds, regardless of technical proficiency. Ultimately, by removing barriers and encouraging participation, we can all learn and grow together as photographers and as a community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to show a friend around LA, I’d want to give them a taste of the city’s iconic landmarks and vibrant culinary scene. First, I’d take them to Hollywood to marvel at the famous Hollywood Sign, a symbol of the city’s glamour and entertainment industry. Next, we’d head to Griffith Observatory for breathtaking views of the city skyline and the chance to explore fascinating exhibits about space and astronomy. To round out the day, I’d treat them to a culinary adventure, sampling a few of LA’s trendy eateries in Silver Lake. It’s the perfect mix of sightseeing and gastronomic delights that captures the essence of LA’s allure.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
