We had the good fortune of connecting with Britney Mendoza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Britney, what principle do you value most?
The principle that matters most to me is believing that doing good brings good. I could be the most successful person on the planet but if I rude, disrespectful and discourteous to the people around me, that defeats my purpose in life. As a small business owner, how I treat others – customers and fellow entrepreneurs – reflects directly on me. I am building a legacy for myself and for my community; and it’s important to me that its a positive one. When my neighbor succeeds, I succeed and vice versa.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started candle making as an outlet in 2015 and its morphed my company into what it is now, and will continue growing. I’ve always had a passion for home decor and trinkets that are harder to find and allow my home to be unique in comparison to my neighbor’s. What I believe sets me apart from others is that I am in the business to create and curate timeless fragrances and decor pieces that you won’t find any where else.
I am most proud of the fact that I was able to make this my full time job and leave my corporate job behind. It was the best decision not only for my business but also for my family.
Determination and perseverance have been my “road-dogs” on this journey. I will not allow myself to fail but am understanding that I will never stop learning if I want to continue growing. Not being afraid to stumble and figuring out how overcome obstacles without stepping over your support group – however and whomever that may be – is important.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The City of Oxnard has a lot of history and depending on the time of year you visit will determine where you explore. We are such a melting pot of a community that different corners of the city have different attributes.
During the summer, the beaches are warm but the water is cold. Explore the Strand, Hollywood beach, Mandalay beach & Hueneme Beach. There is also the Channel Islands harbor with is a rocky coast, but has some great entertainment and restaurants year round. Our Food Truck Festival runs from Spring to Fall, every first Thursday.
We also have the Salsa Festival which lands in July.
During Christmas season, explore Candy Cane lane and Plaza park for some amazing lights and the annual tree lighting.
There is so much history explaining how this city was founded its impossible to list everything. Good places to start would be Heritage Square in Downtown Oxnard and take one of their docent tours.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, this shoutout goes to my family and friends who never doubted my ability to go after this dream.
Second, to my retailers:
1) Heritage Coffee & Gifts were my very first retailer and has allowed me to expand my reach within the community and help build my customer base one purchase at a time.
2) Bougie Beach Co has been an absolute blessing. Nicole and her customers are so appreciative of my hard work and dedication to providing high quality products; and they love to tell every time I meet any of them.
3) To every single event organizer I’ve had the pleasure to work with: Sarah, Shenee & Ally, Jose, Jenna, Olive, Mujeres in Santa Barbara, Downton Oxnard, In the Loop – Temecula, Artist Brew, Creative Babes, Anthropologie, Black in Business, and so many more!
4) And of course, all of my customers new and returning. You make it worth while. I am proud to celebrate TFC’s 2nd year in business with all of you.
