We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittaney Elise and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittaney, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When I think about risk, I ultimately am thinking about the potential outcomes for any situation and lean toward what feels right within my core. Risk is a factor we all experience in our daily lives — in decision-making that may be a huge step or a small detail; from business to personal — in my experience, our well-being and ability to perform is affected by the risks we choose or choose not to take. This is true to the journey of our career paths, but also so valuably to our many varied relationships as well. I founded my first company — BE by Brittaney Elise, a traditional boutique Interior Design services firm — nearly a decade ago. At the time, all of the risks I took in business mostly affected me personally. Deciding to leave a steady paycheck and drop working for any other company as I set out to establish a business on my own, was a huge risk in income and survival. That kind of financial stress can easily wear on anyone as they are first starting out, and if the risk doesn’t prove it’s reward within a pretty immediate time frame, that’s something that can affect the way new potential clients read you. For me, there was no other way. I believe the reward will always far outweigh the risk if there is a PASSION and DRIVE toward what you are trying to achieve. Que Sera Sera. I began research and development for my second company — HOME by BE, a designer curated e-commerce marketplace for home goods and custom furniture design — about four years ago; and launched the platform last year — March 2020, amidst the beginning of a new chapter in global history, the COVID-19 Pandemic. The risk here was high, as most movements for any business-owner at this time were. The difference between the risk factor from my first business to the second was tremendous: I, now a single mother of one toddler, have a lot more on the line when the decisions I make involve considerable risk. To self-fund a second business with zero outside support means taking away funding to support my family in the hope of a long-term successful outcome by initially investing into all of the costs that it takes to set up a new company of this nature. This means our lifestyles would be affected. This means both my business and personal relationships might experience more stress. Yet once again we are brought to a key fork in the road in taking that leap: Do you have no other way? Is this a risk you are willing to take? Is the reward worth it? Can you FEEL the answer in your CORE? For me, HOME by BE was an investment I was 100% willing to take — everything about this path aligns with not only my brand, but my being. And the result? Well-received confirmation within a considerably successful first year officially in business. I do believe that what’s meant for you will always find you. I know we hear this on a loop all the time. But the older I’ve grown, the more this has resonated and proven its truth time and time again. I personally believe in the power of home — and by listening to that feeling within my core being, I’ve been able to evaluate and navigate risks specifically pertaining to the alignment of my passions, my creative talents, my visions, my drive, and ultimately: my truth. No one knows everything for certain. That’s the thing about risk: it’s a RISK! — But I do know that this school of thought has not only played a major role in my risk-taking decisions, but very much proven itself fulfilling.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BE by BRITTANEY ELISE: traditional boutique interior design services firm www.brittaneyelise.com HOME by BE: Designer curated home marketplace www.homebybe.com MAISON: Tech platform celebrating sustainability beginning at home (new start-up founded this year!) www.mymaison.co “I BELIEVE YOUR HOME, A PERSONAL AND SACRED SPACE, IS ESSENTIAL TO EVERY INDIVIDUAL’S WELL BEING. I BELIEVE THAT PERSONALIZING + BEAUTIFYING THAT SPACE; WHATEVER DEFINITION OF BEAUTY WTIHIN A SPACE MAY BE TO YOU — IS IMPORTANT. I BELIEVE IN THE UPLIFT AND EMPOWERMENT THAT COMES FROM YOUR HOME ENVIRONMENT. FROM THE AESTHETICS CHOSEN, TO THE VIBE CREATED, TO THE TEMPERATURE AND TEXTILES FELT, TO THE COLORS SUBCONSCIOUSLY AFFECTING YOUR PSYCHE, TO THE WORDS USED TO DESCRIBE YOUR ATMOSPHERE, THE WAY YOU SPEAK TO YOURSELF, TO OTHERS, AND ABOUT OTHERS WITHIN YOUR SPACE… IT ALL ADDS UP. I BELIEVE OUR HOME ENVIRONMENT — HOW IT LOOKS, HOW IT FEELS — HAS MASSIVE POWER AND INFLUENCE OVER EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIVES THAT MOST DO NOT REALIZE. IT ALWAYS STARTS AT HOME. I BELIVE IN THE BEAUTY AND LOVE THAT SHOULD COME FROM HOME BASE; WHERE YOUR MORNINGS BEGIN, YOUR DAYS END, AND YOUR NIGHTS ARE HOPEFULLY FILLED WITH RESTFUL SLEEP. I BELIEVE IN HELPING OTHERS TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL, PERSONALIZED, ‘DREAM’ SPACES TO THRIVE IN. I BELIEVE THIS IS MY GIFT, AND THIS IS WHAT I BELIEVE I AM MEANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE WORLD DURING THIS LIFETIME.”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Saturday coffee at home… The Calabasas Farmers Market (local to me) early morning for a good shop and croissants, Malibu Farm on the beach for lunch, Elephanté in Santa Monica or Soho House in West Hollywood for a glass of wine + sunset dinner…. The Malibu Cafe nestled within the canyon for an outdoor cinema movie night during the early summer months on a Sunday.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
