We had the good fortune of connecting with Buppy. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Buppy., is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my successes thus far has been keeping my head down and pushing forward, ignoring any criticisms I receive and not getting lost in the competition that surrounds me. Often I see people wear themselves down over cynical comments made by peers, this is something I was victim to years ago. I worked past it though, and made sure I have enough love for myself and my craft to combat any negative outside influence. I make my music for me, ever since I started. It has always been a therapeutic habit and that’s why I won’t let other’s opinions take a toll on how/what I choose to create. The other important factor for me has been ignoring competition. I think artists often get lost in what everyone around them is doing instead of focusing on what matters, which is what THEY themselves are doing. If you spend too much time thinking about those around you, envying why you aren’t in their position, you will never reach any position greater than the one you are currently in.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting to where I am now was not easy. I released my first song publicly at the age of twelve on Soundcloud, and immediately got clowned by my peers. I faced criticism pretty much every single year I continued up until 2020, when I began to hear positive reinforcement from those around me. It wasn’t easy to ignore the negative comments, and often I felt I should stop because I have no future in music. Overtime though, I became resilient and was able to find my sound, and the same people who once shamed me are the ones who come to every show.

During this journey, I learned it’s really important to have a good team around you. One that sees your vision, and pushes you to work harder for your success. I have to pay my respects for my director, Anthony Palmer who always comes prepared to each and every shoot wanting to produce better and better content. And to my producer, BOIA (Cole Boillat), who makes sure each record we put out is better than the next. He also accompanies me on my tours as my keyboardist. Also, my manager, Benicio Wallraff, who takes on the job of helping me through building connections and brainstorming/executing creative ideas. Lastly, my sister Eleanor Kingston who makes sure I’m always head strong and gives me inspiration to continue on with my career.

I feel what sets me apart from others is my love for experimentation. I make so many different genres of music, blending them together constantly. I’m willing to take the risks sonically and from a branding standpoint that many others aren’t. I feel like if you aren’t doing something completely unique, no one will pay the mind. So yeah, I’m proud of myself for continuing to explore the grey areas and build something that has never been done before.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well! I would definitely take them to Tribek Open Space. It’s a little lookout in Hollywood, perhaps my favorite in the entire city. Not many know about it, but the view is insane. You can see every single part of LA, even some of the suburbs, and the lights at night are unparalleled. I often write up there, as well as just think about my life and what’s going on around me. I also would have them pay a visit to Manhattan Beach with me, my favorite beach in Los Angeles. Just a fun place to relax, nice sands, and good food. I would make sure for dinner we went to Open Sesame, a high-end mediterranean spot on Beverly, LOVE THAT PLACE. Feel like a king every time I’m there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While my whole family have been the most supportive and helpful influence on my career, my mother & sister specifically deserve this shoutout. My mother has pushed me to go beyond the barriers that were set for me, helping me pursue online education so I have more everyday time to focus on my music work for instance. She flies out to every one of my shows and screams the lyrics louder than everyone else. She has become my best friend by giving me mental support whenever I’m in need. Wherever I am, and wherever I go, I know she’s watching me, and I know she’s always a call away. My sister, Eleanor Kingston, has given me more inspiration than anyone else. As a fellow music artist, she inspired me to work harder and really delve into the business side of music. She is the sole reason I moved to Los Angeles, and she is the sole reason I keep working every single day. Without the most important women in my life, I would be nothing.
