We had the good fortune of connecting with Libby Amber Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Libby, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For as long as I can remember, I had a creative soul. I would memorize lyrics to songs and lines to movies and monologues from school skits. Yet I struggled when it came to studying for subjects like math and science. So I would create rap songs and do extra credit presentations to make the subjects more interesting. Once a devoted teacher helped me realize I was an audible learner, it helped me hone those listening skills and earn my way into a BFA performance program in college at University at Buffalo. I loved the acting process, and soon found my niche through internships in talent and casting management. I was blessed to acquire an amazing mentor, Alan Zweibel, for a senior year project in spring 2020, who helped develop my natural comedic nature. But then the pandemic hit.

A natural networker, I turned to social media last March, and alone in my Buffalo apartment tried out my first TikTok video. The persona of Sheryl Cohen came to me effortlessly- loosely based on a conversation with my mom, as a cliche of a Jewish matriarch worried about how to create a virtual Passover seder. I was amazed to find that TikTok shared one of my earliest videos on their Instagram story. Getting direct messages from all over the world, I was amazed at how much of an impact I was making as an actual social media influencer. Part of what made me successful is that given my own short attention span, I quickly mastered the art of short, enticing content.

By applying my love of performance with a broad social network, I began coordinating large “live” events on Instagram by collaborating with both established organizations and newer ad hoc groups. It was rewarding to meet fans of all ages and establish some lasting friendships too. I was soon overwhelmed with requests from companies and organizations reaching out for branding deals, both Jewish and mainstream brands. That soon led to an amazing full time job with Kii NYC, a new NYC Jewish nonprofit for young professionals. Working at Kii provides the opportunity to use my social media skills and help them grow as well as meet more Jewish people who watched my content in person.

While it’s uncertain at the moment if I’ll be returning to my passion of casting and talent management, I wouldn’t turn down the chance to play Sheryl Cohen in a TV show or play. Like my mom always taught me, passion plus hard work – and timing – equals success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Central park is probably the most interesting place in New York city – a constant source of prime people watching, diversity and entertainment. Some less organic favorite destinations spots include Hudson Yards, Meatpacking, Broadway theater.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am indebted to my mother as the inspiration and partial source of my comedic skills. If she never called to worry about me daily, I would have no content. Also a big shout out to Maria Horne, Director of University at Buffalo’s Theatre and Performance, for all the guidance and opportunities she provided, both in the classroom and our London tour.
