We had the good fortune of connecting with Byrdie Lifson Pompan & Dr. Valerie Ulene and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Byrdie & Dr. Ulene, how does your business help the community?
While 75 million baby boomers are aging into the demographic of people who will need our products, our products also serve people with disabilities, or recovering from surgery or injury. Boom Home Medical is the first company to create products that are beautifully designed, highly functional, and easy to use — allowing for people to care for their basic human needs with dignity. Home healthcare products are a CPG category that has experienced virtually no innovation since the original products were invented. Baby boomers have grown accustomed to innovation in every other product category, from electric cars to iPhones. They are not going to want to use the same products their parents and grandparents used. They deserve better. Because no one should feel ashamed to care for their basic needs.

What should our readers know about your business?
Dr. Val Ulene and I partnered over 12 years ago and founded Clear Health Advisors, a Healthcare Navigation company. We help people identify the most appropriate specialists for their healthcare issues. Through our work at Clear Health Advisors we saw first hand the home healthcare products that were available to people as they aged into the demographic of consumer, or were recovering from surgery or injury. I had been an agent at Creative Artists Agency for almost twenty years before I personally experienced our healthcare system up close and personal. Once I personally experienced the complex maze of our healthcare system, through the patient experience, I new I could use my skills to make a positive impact on the system. First it was with Clear Health Advisors, and helping patients identify appropriate treatment options, and then it was with Boom Home Medical in creating more beautiful products that would eliminate shame for the people who needed them. Our products not only serve older, individuals, or people recovering from surgery, injury, or chronic disease… But they are also a game changer for hiking, camping, boating, or even going to Coachella because public restrooms are filthy!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having started two business in the past 12 year, one launching as recently as a year ago…I’m afraid I’m not the best person to ask about best places for hanging out. Los Angeles is filled with so many great places, both in the city or by the shore. I recommend checking out All Trails for some incredible hikes.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All of our friends and loved ones who supported our efforts to create products that will allow people to care for themselves with dignity. I would also like to thank our investors who saw the opportunity to create products that were aesthetically, beautiful for the people that needed them, and believed in us as the founders that could bring this much needed innovation to life. We also want to thank all of the caregivers who recommend and utilize our products for the people they serve.  And lastly, our families for putting up with the long hours away from home that launching a new business takes to get off the ground.
