We had the good fortune of connecting with Kym De Los Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kym, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am becoming a risk taker late in life. A few years ago, two words changed my life…”WHY NOT?” Someone is going to make a living as an artist, why not me? The possibilities are endless for someone who wants it and is willing to put the work in. The risk taking in my career turned into a “WHY NOT?” You have nothing to fear but fear itself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to live professionally on the canvas in between abstraction and representational. My art tends to straddle abstracts and landscapes, constantly blurring the line of the two. I think my paintings are identifiable by the looseness and palette choices, elements that I have worked for years to find. I think setting your self apart as an artist, honing in on certain skills, choices, techniques or style, takes years to find a consistency in the body of work. I found that working everyday, carving out studio time, was so important to my practice and valuable to my growth in building identity as an artist.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is always a good time with so many diverse an exciting excursions to offer anyone.
La jolla is a city that is lived outdoors…kayaking, hiking, ocean life…it is so fabulous and quaint!
Mission bay has a great bike path about 11 miles around. That is a family favorite to stop and people watch or have a picnic.
Downtown San Diego (particular the gaslamp district) is a blast for nightlife and fun! It is fun to jump on the ferry from downtown and go to Coronado
Coronado is my favorite to bike the city, look at the beautiful homes, grab a bite to eat at the ferry landing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
