We had the good fortune of connecting with C. Riana Manuel-Peña and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi C. Riana, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Growing up as a millennial in the Midwest I was taught that you’re supposed to go to college, intern at a big company, work there for 15 years, and gradually move up until eventually retiring. But this path wasn’t available to me nor to many of my counterparts after graduation. We came into a workforce and an economy turned upside-down, and we were forced to compete for entry-level roles alongside 10+ year veterans in some cases. I quickly realized that my career was entirely in my own hands and true success – financial security and job fulfillment – would only come if I worked for myself.

What should our readers know about your business?
My partner and I have a combined 30+ years of experience in the games industry, and with our new business we offer media consulting, hosting and speaking engagements, podcast integrations, and marketing support for companies in gaming or looking to get into gaming. What sets us apart from others in this space is our first-hand experience both inside games publishing and development as well as production expertise as games media and content creators. The path hasn’t been easy, especially as a man and woman of color, but our perseverance and ingenuity have motivated us to always move differently and lead rather than follow trends.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a fun weekend in LA, I love to start with a leisurely trip to Westfield Fashion Square mall for window shopping and grabbing a gift or two for family and friends. Then, lunch at Kura Revolving Sushi Bar is a must – I love the little robots that deliver your drinks! After that, we would most likely catch a movie at AMC Burbank (16, not Town Center!) and grab some Cold Stone Creamery while enjoying whatever outdoor market or street performer is gracing Palm Ave. As a chill second day, we’d take some snacks over to Valley Glen Community Park and sit in the sun while watching the off-leash dogs and children play.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shout-out to my mother, Veronica Manuel-Gilbert, for always being my #1 cheerleader. From day 1, she has encouraged me to find my own way in the world and supported me even when my plans were unfathomable to her. Every step of the way my mom has been a part of my journey and I am forever grateful to her.
