Meet Cameron Rice | Director/Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, what role has risk played in your life or career?
You have to take risk. The biggest thing is knowing you are going to fail, not everything will work. And that’s okay. There are lessons to be learned in failure. Do you try the same thing again but in a different approach, or do you try something totally new and different.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a big believer in just doing it. You don’t need to wait for someone to give you permission. Get a camera, get a paint brush, whatever you want to do, and just start doing it. Wake up on a Saturday and just start creating. Absolutely some projects you want to take your time and think about, but there are others you can just start going, get a friend and start experimenting. Find it in the creation. Write a story beat outline and just improv some stuff.
I bought a camera because on was on a sketch team and wanted to shoot my own sketches. Because I had a camera and love movies I thought I could do some photoshoots in a certain genre (Noir, Horror, etc) I would just put out on social media “Hey I want to do this, anyone want to do it with me?” And you’ll get a lot of responses of people who also want to just create.
Soon enough people see those creations and say “Hey you want to help me make something? I can pay you.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend is visiting LA for the first time and they’re a friend of mine, got a killer list of things and places we can do.
First you have to get the food right, it’s important, you go to Big Boy and you get them a burger and a coke. The next time you’re going to Foreman’s to have a Whiskey and then driving over to Thirsty Merchant, watch the Dodgers while having some wings. You also have to hit up Fred’s and get some diner food and a shake.
For night light you can’t go wrong taking in The New Bev or Vidiots, with some awesome Q&As and a fantastic audience.
Take them to Amoeba if they’re a vinyl head to pick up something awesome, for sure to the discount section cause they will have some amazing stuff.
If they’re a book person, you take them to The Iliad.
For some culture we’re gonna go the The Broad downtown and see a concert at The Ford. They’re gonna see how amazing this city is.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For me this doesn’t happen without having friends you can turn to and get advise from. Or friends who will give your name to someone because you’ve built a level of trust.
For me those people are Elizabeth Hayhurst who I’ve known for twenty plus years and I know I can ask anything and she’ll be honest.
Jenn Sterger who really gave me a leg up in photography and helped get my name out there.
Stacy Howard who co produce my first couple of short films.
