We had the good fortune of connecting with Camila Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Camila, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Creative work pulls inspiration from life experiences. Over the years it’s becoming more and more clear that, if my life revolved solely around work, the work itself would become uninspired and I’d find myself struggling to connect with my creativity. I love my work but that’s not what life is about; life is about connection and experiences, and I’m lucky to have a job that allows me to tell stories about those experiences, Framing things in that way helps see “productivity” in a broader sense, not just the capitalistic sense, and allows me to find that famous balance in a more organic way – not work in opposition of life, but work as one of the many fluid and interconnected parts of life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a Production Designer with a special interest in Set Design. As a Production Designer, we are in charge of handling the physical spaces in which stories take place, as well as creating the atmosphere that best supports those stories and their characters. We work closely with Directors and Cinematographers, as well as other professionals in the Art Department to bring sets to life, both on location or on a soundstage. The Set Designer specifically handles the drafting of all elements needed to build a set or set decoration element or prop. I have a lot of experience in drafting and I enjoy the creative process of figuring out the spaces for the needs of the story and the director’s ideas, as well as the logistical needs of a film crew. As a Production Designer, I’ve worked on several student films as well as independent shorts and music videos, and there’s something absolutely incredible about working as a team with other creatives – the product is always better than any of you could have thought of on their own, and it’s a product that could only have been created by the specific people involved. I love the collaboration and I think that’s a strength that I try to bring to all of my projects.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They’ve seen how instinctive design has been for me my entire life and how much satisfaction I get from seeing my projects come to fruition, so they’ve always encouraged me to “go for it”. They have my back through big and risky decisions and they are always there, regardless of the outcome.
