We had the good fortune of connecting with Candice Coke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candice, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
If it weren’t for taking some uncomfortable crazy risks in my journey, I can honestly say I don’t think I would be where I am. Some key moments in my life where I took those risks caused me to make huge leaps in my career, but also lead me to some of my greatest friendships and relationships that still deeply impact my life and growth as a person today. There was a time in my life where i started listening to the outside voices saying….”oh, you can’t do that!” , Or ” You should stop doing that.”. And I realized things got stagnant, and I wasn’t being my authentic self. I had do some serious soul searching as to why I wasn’t creating the life that I had wanted. Then I remembered what it was like to live like a kid, trust my gut, HAVE FUN, and take risks again. Then I started to feel that momentum of life again. Never stop being uncomfortable. Without the discomfort, we can not change or grow.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Overall I consider myself and Artist because I love and have worked in many different areas of this creative business. I was a professional Dancer for years working with Icons like Michael Jackson, Prince, Ricky Martin, Janet Jackson, The Notorious BIG, and many others to, Modeling for NIKE and various brands, to Acting in film and television successfully for the past 10 years. I’m Currently wrapping on a show called Kevin Can F Himself on AMC that I am very proud of. The cast and crew were beyond talented and hardworking, and it was a gift to play with them! But I have also dabbled in fashion, styling, fine arts and whatever other medium I can express myself in. I went to NYU and lived in Manhattan for many years where i got to learn and discover my love for all these things. The journey has had it’s ups and downs, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Challenges are put in front of us to see how badly we want it. It made me more resilient and taught me a lot along the way. I want to be the kind of person people will look at one day and say….” Wow, she believed in herself and never gave up. But she did it with grace and kindness along the way. “. I think there is enough to go around for everyone, and you don’t have to be nasty or act entitled to get there.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to entertain and have fun, so an exciting week with me would be eating at some yummy restaurants like Pace for dinner, Mauro’s Cafe @ Ron Herman for lunch. Going to Karaoke at Brass Monkey in Korea Town. We may also experience the Korean spa while we are down there! Hiking or doing a yoga/meditation class in the mornings. Hit up the Beach and maybe spoil ourselves at Nobu Malibu. Have drinks on a rooftop downtown somewhere, peruse the Fairfax Flea Markets or a Farmers Market on the weekend, and do a lil IPIC movie experience to unwind. It may sound a little bougie, but I DO like luxury at times. So i’d wrap it all up into one big box for a bestie!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
That’s a hard one…..I would like to dedicate my shoutout to ALL the people in my life who have Inspired me. From My Friends and Family, to the yoga teacher in that random studio, who said that one thing that made me look inside and say Hmmm. I can do better. I believe it’s really about taking the time to pause and look around. The messages to show us love and inspiration is ALL around us. Sometimes it’s a Hummingbird that is working so hard to be its true self and be a part of creation. My shoutout is to everyone that does their best to operate from love and not fear. My shoutout is to everyone who is doing their best for the greater good of themselves AND the world.
