We had the good fortune of connecting with Carla Bonilla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carla, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I actually have a background in musical theater. When I realized that wasn’t quite for me, I knew that I needed to stay in a field where I could continue to be creative in some way as well as bring smiles to peoples faces. I began working as a makeup artist and I absolutely loved it! Being able to make people feel as beautiful on the outside as they feel on the inside truly brightened my own outlook on life. I decided to go to esthetician school shortly after as a back up plan. I wanted to have the technical training in sanitation and the anatomy of the skin to help further my career as a makeup artist. After I performed my first facial on a client, I was hooked! I fell in love all over again! The ability to not just make people feel beautiful, but to also treat my clients’ skin concerns that they would typically hide under their makeup gave me so much more satisfaction! Being able to mix and match different ingredients and products everyday in order to give my client the skin that they want brings me so much more happiness than any other job I’ve ever had. Knowing that my clients leave my treatment room with so much joy to then spread that joy to the rest of the people in their world is just the icing on the cake.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from other skincare professionals is that I’m truly not a fan of a gimmick! I want to use the ingredients and treatments that are going to work for your skin. Not something that’s just going to look good in an instagram post.
Getting to this point of me owning my own business hasn’t particularly been easy, but not necessarily hard either. I knew I had a goal that I wanted to reach and what I needed to do to reach it. What made the process a bit more enjoyable was setting small goals and celebrating those victories every step of the way! I have been a licensed esthetician for 3 years, been in the beauty industry for 8 years and I just opened my business this year, fresh out of the pandemic!
The biggest lesson I had to learn, and am still learning during this process is to not let outside factors influence my choices. It’s easy to let people or unforeseen hiccups slow you down. Again, just remaining focused and giving myself grace when I need it.
I want people to know that I have created my whole business from scratch! I am immensely proud of what I have created and all I want is to share my love of skincare with everyone that crosses my path!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d start the trip light at my favorite smoothie spot, Naturewell Cafe in studio city. After that is definitely a drive up to Zuma beach. There are always dolphins swimming close to shore which I love to see. For the rest of the week we’d probably go to an indie film at the Laemmle Theater in Noho, and visits to the Getty and The Griffith Observatory to watch the sunset!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh so many people have supported me through the process of me owning my own business and growing as an esthetician! I’d have to thank Devin Compton Guzman for recommending me for this interview! Also Amanda Sorensen, Kylie and Jonathan Rosenson for being my biggest cheerleaders and support system during esthetician school!
