We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Deltizzle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, why did you pursue a creative career?
I would say it was a gut feeling and the urge to express myself. Through the years, practicing and studying art improved my skills and I felt like I could make a career out of it. I didn’t want to pursue anything else but art.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My professional art journey started after high school when I started drawing daily and developing my style. I started with doing a lot of pen and ink drawings, which allowed me to show off my mark making and detail oriented mind on paper. The art I create is a mixture of my imagination, visual library, and subjects I enjoy drawing. After a couple of years, I branched out to painting and drawing digitally to try other mediums. This opened the door to graphic design for me. Digital drawing allowed me to earn an income with my art by working on multiple commissions like creating logos, apparel designs, cover arts, etc. Over the years, some important lessons I learned would be to take time off from the art and also don’t forget to have fun. Taking breaks from the everyday routine of working on art really helped my mental health and I gained tons of inspiration from observing the world around me. When it comes to creating art, don’t forget to have fun with it. Overtime, I started to avoid drawing because it felt like a chore/job. Until I remembered that feeling I had when I first started drawing and that is to have fun with it and that nobody is perfect. Don’t be so hard on yourself and just trust the journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them on a train ride to Chicago. Hit up the Art Institute for tons of inspirational art to observe, and also walk around Millennium Park/Grant Park(The Bean). Afterwards, get lunch at Portillos(gotta get the cheesy beef). Then, fall asleep and take the train back to the suburbs.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to Pierre Lucero and Oscar Leon. We all took art classes together during college, numerous draw sessions, and created our own art collective together called Abnormal Perspective. We always supported and encouraged one another to get better and that really sparked my drive to take art seriously and make it a career.
