We had the good fortune of connecting with J Soundz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to control my own career. Even when I had other jobs I did them in my own way. I was at the point where I was like I was tired of trading hours for dollars. When Covid first hit I needed something where I wouldn’t have to rely on a client to bring in an income. I wanted something stamped, this is mine & I’m going to go for it. Now is the time.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Everything I create is authentic, it stands for something. My brand Stay On Top is about facing your fears, overcoming challenges. Staying on top of yourself when things get low or you feel down. Staying towards your path & journey. As creatives we get thrown a lot of curveballs & its up to you to stay focused & stay on top of your grind.
I got to where I am today with lots of hard work. There’s no easy way. I’m still working hard & learning how to better myself and my business. You have to believe in yourself, people thought my name was corny, or I couldn’t be in the position I am now but I’m here. I overcame a lot of the challenges by just keeping myself grounded & just by creating. Creating freely is my stress relief.
I’ve learned that you need to keep solid people around you. Not everyone has your best interest. Pray for discernment.
I want people to look & be like if he can do it so can I.
I went to NYC with $50 made a name for myself moved to LA went broke again & still came out on top. It’s all about consistency. Stay On Top of your path !
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lol I don’t know if I want to tell yall my favorite favorites spots !
I love hiking lets start early AM lets get the mind right. Usually Griffith Park is my go to.
After a good hike you need some food. One of my favorite brunch spots in LA is the Line Hotel.
Definitely gotta hit the beaches, Manhattan Beach, Malibu.
Gotta get some fire fish tacos at Ensenada’s Surf N Turf Grill ! One of my favorite spots for a drink is Hotel Erwin in Venice. Hella vibes. On the weekends I like to shop on Melrose. Fairfax trading post if it’s Sunday.
LA got a few vibes out here I’m still exploring.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s two people who’d I’d like to shoutout. Number one is my mom, Kim Holt. I saw her grind with little to nothing & created a life where she was able to thrive. Entrepreneurship is in my blood, I was about 14/15 when I saw her take her first business off the ground & start making some real money. As a kid she always had me doing some type of hustle, from painting mailboxes in our neighborhood to selling watermelons I was always destine to be an entrepreneur.
Another s/o I want to give is to Walter Randall. Ceo of Lounge Studios Nyc. Walt put me in a position to be uncomfortable & learn how to get it with nothing. When I moved to NYC I was homeless for about a year building a studio & clientele. Walt taught me how to run a full business. I went from being homeless sleeping on the couch to managing 4 recording studios in NYC. That would have never happened without the long nights, the grind ,the hustle, and the wisdom I learned from Walt.
