Meet Carlos Torres | Skateboarder and Skateboard Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlos, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
The end goal is to provide opportunity for those around me and others who share similar values/goals. I’ve already began doing it at a micro level and looking forward to doing so more consistently. Without giving to much detail, it’s about uplifting others while doing so for yourself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Experience is the best teacher, and mentorship is a valuable bonus that often comes along if you’re genuinely trying to learn. My approach is to create first and analyze afterward. Traditionally, there is too much pondering and not enough action. I believe this is because, as a collective, we are insecure and don’t want to be vulnerable. I’m okay with being wrong and vulnerable because life is the best teacher.
What I find most challenging with my approach is that the setbacks can be frequent and painful. Regardless of the pain, it’s about moving forward with intention. My intention is to provide opportunities for others just as I do for myself. If I get a four-slice pizza, I want to give out three. If I get an eight-slice pizza, I want to give out seven.
I want to invite others to share the resources they gain along their journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week-long trip would definitely include a lot of time spent in Boyle Heights.
Each day would revolve around this vibrant area. We would visit Innercity SkateShop for some style points and a fresh complete, and stop by Picaresca Barra de Cafe for coffee and brunch. Ülëw Coffee and Juice would be perfect for some great juice and Chimichurri sandwiches. To satisfy our hunger, I love getting pollo de plancha from Yeya’s restaurant after a morning skate session at Mariachi Plaza.
As we explore these neighborhood gems, we would stroll through Lincoln and Hollenbeck parks, enjoying a raspado or some fruta picada from the local street vendors. The best plan is no plan; we can’t rush a great time, so we would relax and take it easy all week.
However, if there’s a day we feel like staying in, we can enjoy a meal with groceries bought from Marketita Mazatlan on First and Breed Street—that would be ideal.
Either way, you can’t go wrong exploring Cesar Chavez, First, and Fourth streets. You’ll find similar yet unique experiences everywhere you go.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well my story has over two dozen chapters and each have a lot of shout outs. But to make the choice easier on me I’ll choose one that applies to this chapter of my life. Steve Corona, the love he shows is unconditional forsure, support comes without filter and his mentorship has definitely helped me understand what my personal weaknesses are. His encouragement comes in many forms from celebrating my personal wins to perspectives on how I can approach future challenges.
