We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmen Miranda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carmen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Flexibility! Flexibility to go against the grain and have the opportunity to create the life that I want, to share a message that feels most authentic to me, and to have the freedom to create, serve and offer value in a way that comes from my heart and soul…not the status quo.
To go a little deeper, when it comes to me personally- for my own mental health, happiness, and creative clarity- it’s important to honor my individual day to day needs. I am personally not wired to work a 9-5, to sit at a desk for hours, to navigate my life under someone else’s expectations and strict rules, or to have an assigned pay where someone else essentially dictates my worth.
There is no one size fits all to human nature and I believe we all should find that permission within ourselves to learn to create a life that is going to be nurturing, supportive and healthy for who we are. Whether that’s self-employment or navigating the best most aligned way for you to be a part of the corporate world.
I am my most healthy and happiest when I can create my work around my life and individual requirements- not live my life around my work. So when I need to take breaks, when I need to take a sabbatical for my mental and emotional health, when I need to meditate or move my body, or set boundaries in my day to day life- as an entrepreneur, with a well thought out structure for myself… I am allowed to do that.
When I give myself permission to navigate my life and work in a way that is most beneficial and nurturing for who I am- I can support my clients and my business from a full cup and bring my full presence and inner creativity forward. We live in a society that teaches us to go-go-go or get left behind. I honestly don’t think that as a human collective we are meant to live that way. That’s why we see a rise of stress, mental health issues, and sickness in our country.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a women’s holistic fitness and wellness coach- founder of Intuitively Fit 360 Coaching. I help women release weight, maintain their energy, and find realistic strategies to sustain day to day wellness practices.
I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 15 years now and through supporting 100’s of clients and navigating my own mind and body journey I was bumping up against a lot of the messages the fitness and wellness industry puts out there.
There are expectations around body image and what it means to look fit, there’s an idea of no pain- no gain, there is complete and utter information overload around what you need to be doing to be considered “fit and healthy”. So many women were coming to me feeling burnt out, overwhelmed, and frustrated because they were following all these intense plans and outside advice, but they weren’t able to sustain them or their results for the long term- essentially going into guilt and shame when that isn’t healthy either.
What I realized is that all the outside plans and advice that these women were investing in- that I was investing in and learning about… were not made with the individual in mind.
So over time what I realized is that in order to keep weight off or sustain wellness in your life for the long term you truly have to KNOW yourself- it’s a deep self awareness.
So I’ve built my work around supporting women to learn to use their body’s cues, deepen their self-awareness, and strengthen their own intuition on what works specifically and enjoyably for them!
When your wellness plan of action comes from who YOU are as an individual you are much more likely to stick it out and learn how to pivot when life gets in the way.
It’s a bit of a different message than what you might see out there on a day to day basis- it’s not what the media sells, it’s not a quick fix, it’s not sexy. But, in my opinion and experience it’s what truly works!
One of my values for my life and work is to stand in truth and integrity. So I will not be the coach to sell you 6 pack abs in 4 weeks- but I will hold your hand and support you as you take the journey into YOU to find true and lasting health and inner happiness.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok- so I have discovered that the Front Yard is my favorite restaurant in the Valley. Good vibes, amazing food and drinks. At dinner time they have these 12 min biscuits… OMG, so good.
I LOVE Afro soul house music. I love to free my body and spirit dancing to a drum beat, and I have a lot of friends that do as well. Every Sunday there is a rooftop party hosted by Utopia Tribe that I would definitely recommend. Have a drink, check out the LA rooftop views, and feel a beat in your soul.
When it’s not blazing hot,I take all my guests hiking! I’ve taken people to the popular Griffith Observatory, I’ve hiked up to the top of the Hollywood Sign from the Innsdale Drive trailhead, and did some waterfall hanging out at Eaton Canyon. Highly recommend if you’re ok with rock and stream skipping. I love it here!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my partner/boyfriend Bryan Ladd. He is an extremely talented musician (bass player) here is LA. I am originally from NYC- so Bryan and I were in a long distance relationship (him being here in LA) and we were brought closer together when I locked down here in Los Angeles for almost 3 months unexpectedly with him during the height of the COVID pandemic.
Our time together showed me that my next step in life was to make the move from NYC to LA. Leaving my business, clients and everything I’ve known behind to start over new. As you can imagine, it’s been a scary, exciting, and challenging journey. Bryan has been such an amazing support and has had my back throughout the entire process.
He’d made the move from the East to West Coast some years prior and also had to navigate rebuilding his business and network and finding his way to success through the LA music scene. His kindness, love, support, and his own past experience has been such a huge help and safe space for me as I navigate who I am as a partner, individual, coach, creative and entrepreneur here in Los Angeles. My gratitude is big!!!
