We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmen Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carmen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There is definitely a thought process to starting my own business. Starting Flesh ONEsie Creations, LLC was inspired by many soul nudges and a desire to “be the change I want to see.” When I was in high school, I had a vision for myself that included being on a television show and producing independent tv/film projects through my own production company. In college, I really fell in love with the creation process and everything it takes to put on a production. I was a dance management major and while I spent as much time performing as I could, I studied general business/management, as well as arts management. Organizational behavior was a management class that deeply inspired me, in terms of starting to think about how organizations and businesses run, leadership, and the ability we have to create a process and environment where people are inspired to give their best, which in turn creates the best results. So much of it boils down to having a vision and human behavior. In addition to decades of artistic development as an actress, improviser, writer, and creator, I have a diverse work experience: years working in the service industry, sold cars cars, business to business sales, teaching acting to young professional actors and coaching/facilitating. I also acquired certifications in teaching yoga/meditation and public speaking, leadership development and DISC behavioral analysis. One day a few years ago, the question came to me: who do I have to become to run a successful company that people are coming to me eager to invest or collaborate? This is what inspired me to do the leadership development and coaching certification program. “If not now, when,” was the tipping point to making Flesh ONEsie Creations an official business, which I am calling an entertainment and lifestyle company. I’ve developed a deep passion for female financial sovereignty and being an embodiment of my belief that we are all worthy of living our own individual versions of happily ever after. We are on a mission to “increase the quality of humankind, one story at a time.” It is said that the quality of our humanity is equal to the quality of stories we tell. We intend to create high quality storytelling that fosters our humanity and to provide a high quality creative environment and collaborative process. We aim to contribute to cultivativing a greater quality of life for all humans.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There is a quote that I love: “being good isn’t enough, when you dream of being great.” Having a desire to be a great artist and also to be a great human, that people love to be around is a driving force for me. One of my affirmations is around having a reputation for being uniquely talented and a joy to work with and have on set. I’m always creating, really love the experience of creative collaboration, and find myself regularly expanding my comfort zone. I am a NERD for improv, I love sketch comedy and also love Shakespeare. There is a certain iconic sketch comedy show that has become a north star, and a very real possibility for me, and one of my dream roles is Viola/Cesario in 12th Night. I truly believe laughter is medicine. Instigating and sharing laughter is one of my favorite highs. I recently played a cannibal cult member and think it is a blast to play villains/assassins, etc. I’m currently extremely excited about two feature films in particular and the ideal film launch for Flesh ONEsie Creations: Sheila Got Bangs by Lydia Hyslop and Henrietta & The Southern Bells, written by Lynna Yee and myself: inspired by 12x National Champion Handbell Choir Director and master artist, Henrietta Woodcox. I’m in the process of creating a short rock opera “Handbells in Space” about Henrietta getting cryogenically frozen, waking up in space, and having to save humanity with the art of the handbells.

The only thing harder than pursuing your dreams, is NOT. That and trusting in my own unique artistic and professional journey are two of the biggest themes in my life. There is a 7 year period that I left LA, and while I continued to act, having a career in entertainment wasn’t really on the radar. Having the courage to love myself enough to move back to LA is something I will give myself props for. I’ve learned SO MUCH along the way and through so many epic failures. We humans are powerful creators. Our minds are powerful, our words create our worlds, energy flows where focus goes, and we truly have the ability to create the world we want to live in. It all boils down to fear, or love, and which one we choose. The biggest gain from all of my “failing forward” is compassion.

What I would love the world to know about my brand and my story has to do with our ability to create quality of life, for ourselves as individuals, and as a humanity. We are all worthy and deserving of health, happiness, and living our own unique versions of happily ever after. That looks different for each of us. Contributing to greater quality of life and humanity is what it is all about: spreading joy, uplifting, and empowering others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Love this question! I would take them to the Griffith Observatory and hiking up behind the Hollywood sign. We would take a hot yoga class at Kinship Yoga in Highland Park and go to the Atwater Village or Hollywood Farmer’s Market. My friend would get to see Snack Run improv perform at the Pack or Uninvited Guests perform at Lyric Hyperion (shameless self-promotion). We’d go to the Magic Castle and make a trip to the hot springs in Montecito. There are too many great places to eat, so that would just depend on how we felt in the moment. Other options would include a show at the Greek theatre and a soundbath.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people that have contributed to me being here today. John D’Aquino is a big influence and mentor. I teach with his school, and he played a huge role in my moving back to LA, after leaving for a number of years, in which I continued to act but wasn’t pursuing a career in entertainment. I’ve had so many inspiring teachers/coaches/directors: Chick Venerra & Art Wolff (RIP), Jaime Moyer, Paul Vaillancourt, Tom Todoroff, Johnny Simons. Working on projects with Rain Valdez, Rocky Roggio, Shane Brady, Karla Espino, Lydia Hyslop, Jen West, Anthony Pedone…. I feel like a won the lottery being a part of my sketch team, Uninvited Guests AND my improv team, Snack Run Improv. Shoutout to my LOA family and the thriving community of creative people and friends that continue to love me as I am and inspire me to continue to grow and challenge myself. Lynna Yee, who I’ve written a few things with, including the hit upcoming quirky comedy feature Henrietta & the Southern Bells. My cousin, Betsy Beck, who is one of my biggest supporters & a great friend. I’m so grateful to know so many amazing humans. Extra shoutout to the amazing women in my life. I’m also inspired by the greatness of Charlie Chaplin, Lucille Ball and many other artists that came before. I will refrain from sharing a long list of influential books….
