We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Alvarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
With Femme Regard Productions, we are most importantly here to help independent filmmakers grow and pursue their careers while highlighting the voices of women in the industry by the films we make and with the guests we have on our podcast, Femme Regard Podcast. The podcast would be the most important factor in our success by providing a platform for our film industry guests to share who they are and their work while also educating our audience. In return for us, we have connected now with so many amazing filmmakers and others in the production field that we can and have work in collaboration with on each other’s films! We started with knowing absolutely no one in the film industry, and now we have such an amazing “Femme Fam” community and love getting our female filmmakers to connect with one another. That is the most rewarding aspect of it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I aim to produce films, focusing on female perspectives in relationships, sensuality, and expression, with cultural flares, given my Polish/Colombian background. I grew up a practicing Mormon, first-generation American which had me view the world and the people around me in such a different way to how I view it now. The challenges have been finding and defining my own identity aside from what others perceived or wanted me to be. Also having lived through some toxic, abusive relationships between friendships and relationships I found it important not only to cover those topics in my films but help others understand they aren’t alone and these relationships are not normal. I believe through working through those personal experiences and braving myself slowly to write, I have found my voice in my films. I am also passionate about building an independent film community and finding female filmmakers with whom my company can collaborate with. That is what the “Femme Fam” brand is all about!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First of all, do yourself a favor and rent a convertible, so you can take a drive down the PCH, stop at Malibu Country Kitchen, a shack right off the highway known for the best breakfast burritos. Drive down to Paradise Cove where you can order yourself a piña colada to drink right on the beach. Later treat yourself to a long drive to the Mullholand Scenic Overlook to sunset gaze and smoke a joint cause it’s LA. Still not tired? Go grab a drink at Harriet’s Rooftop bar on sunset blvd in West Hollywood where you can continue to gaze at their amazing city view and groove.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow, where to begin! As a producer, screenwriter I would love to shout out Noam Kroll as a filmmaker colleague and for the Backlot filmmaker group, he’s created which has been instrumentally helpful in working towards Femme Regard Production’s first feature film! For me as an actor, I would like to shout out Director, Filmmaker Katrina Cebreiro for having me star in her latest short film “Pollete”, coming out later this year, which tells are a story that is so personal to me about women’s freedom in sexual expression and breaking the stereotypical standards for woman’s role in society. That film was the exact type of story and message I want to define my life’s work by and I am still overjoyed by the experience of being able to act with such a talented cast and crew! I’d like to also shoutout author Corey McComb and his book, “Productivity is for Robots” which has been an amazing cure to fighting burnout and writer’s block. There are so many others who deserve a shout out but recently these humans have been such amazing supporters and collaborators. Lastly, I’d like to shout out my mom who’s always supported my artistic dreams and listens to every podcast episode while taking notes to discuss with me afterward, she’s the darn cutest.
