We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Groppa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks is an important part of living a creative life. One cannot really exist without the other. Many of the accomplishments of my career have been direct results of risks I’ve taken…from moving to Los Angeles at 19 to figuring out how to produce and finance my first play. It’s not an easy pursuit, but it’s certainly a worthwhile one.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I thrive on making the impossible possible…or at least trying to. Nothing about my journey has been easy, but so far it has certainly been worth it. I think what sets me apart if my hustle, my integrity, and my sense of humor. I take the work seriously, but not myself. Being curious has also helped me continue to learn and elevate myself in an industry that is constantly evolving. One of the most challenging and rewarding projects I’ve tackles so far is the podcast I host and produce, LIFE WITH CACA. It’s a true labor of love as I do everything on my own. It requires much stamina and resilience, The podcast demystifies what a particular producer does by going behind the title while also getting into the messy parts of their journey, aka the caca. It’s also a play on my Portuguese nickname. Producers know first hand the unglamorous realities of our business, so I am on a mission to share our stories, shine a light on what it takes, and help other producers navigate their own paths. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for other creatives across all disciplines to deepen their knowledge of our world to create a more collaborative, compassionate industry. All 47 episodes are available on www.lifewithcaca.com Past guests include: * Eva Longoria, EP on many docs and TV shows * Chelsea Winstanley, producer of Academy Award winning JOJO RABBIT * Stephanie Allain, Producer of BOYZ N THE HOOD, HUSTLE & FLOW * Barbara Muschietti, Producer of IT and IT: CHAPTER 2 * Michelle Purple, Jessica Biel’s producing partner at Iron Ocean Productions (THE SINNER, LIMETOWN)
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them to Highland Park on a Sunday morning. We’d grab pour overs at Civil Coffee and delicious Austin style breakfast tacos across the street at HomeState. Then, we’d spend the afternoon strolling the Huntington Gardens before making our way to El Matador state beach for the sunset.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to highlight the important work that ManifestWorks is doing. I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in some of their classes and even hire some of their graduates on my sets. We need more of this in our world! “Through immersive learning, real-world work experience, and a network of supportive professional mentors, ManifestWorks connects those impacted by foster care, homelessness and incarceration with job opportunities and provides ongoing life and professional skills to support long-term success.” https://www.manifestworks.org/
