We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Trujeque and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I think Sport Source provides one form of an outlet to help this worldwide epidemic of inactivity, obesity, depression and anxiety. The stats are staggering when it comes to mental health issues and challenges in our world today. I believe a lot of that has to do with the way we have evolved with technology. Technology is amazing if used right, but at our core, we are meant to be active beings. The Global wellness institute who is the authority figure on everything active sites the #2 reason for this worldwide epidemic of inactivity is simply a lack of convenient access to spaces. The exact thing that we are here to provide. Giving people more access to sport, fitness and recreational activities in my mind could give them access to a better life.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So my company is called Sport Source. We are a two sided marketplace for all sports, movement and recreational activity. For the last decade I’ve spent my time training professional NBA athletes, but have always been a lifelong lover of all sports in general. I’m probably most notably known for helping one of my clients go from a $2M contract to securing an $75M four year deal. However, throughout this process realized how archaic the system is for renting ANY type of sports or physical movement space. So I gathered a team of engineers from airbnb and google, and it became our mission to help eradicate this global epidemic of inactivity we are living in by giving people easy and convenient access to rent and pay for an open field, court, or studio, within seconds.
Sport Source works just like Airbnb, but for sports spaces. We come out and photograph your space, set up your listing entirely for you with your direction, advertise your space on our app to prospective renters, and then collect payment and distribute to you- all at no cost to you. This can save thousands on labor costs or expensive software. It eliminates the hassle of collecting payments or needing to have payment processing tools/costs, it adds an extra layer of security to schools as Sport Source users agree to strict guidelines and behavior policies. It gives you some vetting of who is coming in and out the facility, and most importantly I think for Price, it allows it all to be organized in one centralized location, the app or your profile login on the web.
It definitely was not easy along the way and continues to not be easy, but what I keep reminding myself is just one foot in front of the other. When you set out to do something amazing, you don’t set out to accomplish the task in one day. You take the next step everyday. Small things over time consistently become the impossible.
I want the world to know that Sport Source isn’t just a platform to rent sporting places, but its a new way to move, connect, and experience community, play and friendship. Without these things at the center of our lives our human experience wouldn’t be the same.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always say this is the best city in the world to all my friends and they laugh and think that I’m not serious. There’s so much to do, see, and places to check out that you could talk about this forever. We lack nothing when it comes to diversity, culture and fun. If one of my friends was visiting and I wanted to show them the best time, we would definitely have to hit up a few great food spots – Roscoes, King Taco, Sky’s Tacos, Belizean Cuisine on Pico, the farmers Market, bloom cafe if we were looking to be grab a healthy meal and the list can go on and on. Me personally, I’m a pretty active person, so definitely going on of our lovely hikes out here, hitting up a laker and dodger game, and getting a workout in at equinox. To walk around and shop and see people I think places like Rodeo, The Grove, Santa Monica Promenade, would be perfect, you get a mix of people, stores and interest.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow, this is a tough one. There’s been so many people along the way that have helped me with my journey that I believe deserve a shout out, but we can start with my parents. I’ve taken a different path from all my close friends, family and siblings and they have been there and supported me every step of the way. I’ve failed massively at things, lost tons of money and everything in between. The support I continuously receive from them is second to none. I couldn’t be on this journey if they didn’t allow me the freedom to make mistakes and help me learn from that. I understand that not many individuals have that opportunity and I do not take that lightly. They are the foundation to everything. Thank you mom and dad! My cousin Sherland, who first introduced me to Sports. She put a basketball in my hand at the age of three and without her Sports probably wouldn’t even be a thing in my life. She taught me what toughness meant, how to be disciplined and go after what I want. Eric Redd from Evolution 180, probably hands down one of the smartest trainers i’ve ever come in contact with. more than that though, he’s like a second father to me, started me on my training journey and his wisdom, attention to detail and overall understanding of the human body and brain is crazy. Again, if there is no training side to all of this, there is no Sport Source. And last but certainly not least is my cofounder, Molly Kline. I couldn’t have asked for a better cofounder and partner in life. She’s one of the most selfless, hardworking, caring, genuine people I’ve ever met. We’ve built a life long bond that I know whatever comes our way, we will be able to get through. There’s been so many times in the beginning where I thought about giving up, just like every early founder and Molly has picked up the slack. I always say I’m the visionary behind this but Molly makes Sport Source go.
