We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Covington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chad, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk plays a huge role in every aspect of business. Every time you start a project from scratch, get a new person involved, or expand your business physically, you must take risks. When my brother and I first launched Sol Kendamas, we did not think much about the potential risks we were taking on. We made a lot of decisions instinctively, and took much larger risks early on that ended up working in our favor in the long run. Our naivety in entrepreneurship allowed us to confidently take big steps without the fear of failure getting in the way. Often times, the fear of messing up prevents you from taking those big risks. Mistakes lead to learning opportunities and growth, which lead to making better decisions. The times where Sol Kendamas has experienced the most growth were times where we stepped out of our comfort zone, took big risks, and ran with it.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sol Kendamas is a kendama brand that has a strong focus on creating opportunities for people to make friends and grow in community together. Kendama is a century-old Japanese wooden toy that consists of a handle with three cups and a spike, attached by a string to a ball with a hole. The goal of the game is to catch the ball on a cup, or a combination of the cups, and to finish the trick with the ball on the spike. There are many ways to play and share kendama, and new trick combinations are created every day! We make kendamas, but the events that we host, festivals that we attend, and competitions that we stream online bring people together, and that is our main focus. Seeing the community grow and thrive makes all of the hard work worth it. The first kendama event that we hosted back in 2011 had 7 people attending. Our most recent event that we streamed online in 2021 had over 1,000 live viewers at the peak of the stream. It’s so cool to see people come together, and that inspires us to continue doing what we do!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Welcome to Nashville, Tennessee! After I pick you up at BNA, we will take a detour through downtown to see the city and experience Broadway Street. Then we have to go to one of my favorite restaurants, because the first thing you want to do after a flight is get some good food! My best suggestions are Sindoore, Sunflower Bakehouse, The BE-Hive, Graze, AVO, and you can’t visit Nashville without getting some local BBQ and Nashville hot chicken! I love the outdoors, so we will be visiting Radnor Lake State Park, Percy Warner Lake, Narrows of the Harpeth, Pilot Rock, and Shelby Bottoms. For some night life we might revisit Broadway Street, play some Top Golf, or go to a comedy club. A trip to Nashville also requires visiting the full scale replica of the parthenon, going to Cheekwood, and of course the Opryland Hotel. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Three people that have motivated me the most to work hard and focus on my passions are: Casey Neistat, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Sean Wotherspoon. My online and in person interactions with each of these entrepreneurs has really inspired me to never give up on the things that I am most passionate about.
