We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Newsome and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chad, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“When you become conscious, you become responsible,” someone dear to me said this to me. These seven words simply imply that if you have awareness about something, then you are responsible for your actions/reactions about/to that something. Period…make a conscious decision and keep it moving. This is why ‘ignorance IS truly bliss’. Jeez!!!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Filmmaker and Producer, these past four years have been incredible!!

I produced and shot six short films and a tv pilot. We are currently on the film festival route and have amassed many awards. Our last effort, “Keepsake” (a supernatural drama about religion, spirituality, and karma) has won over twenty awards alone, while our comedies “Browsing History”, “The Drug Deal (A Covid-19 Comedy)”, and “The Store (A Covid-19 Comedy)” and the horror “Hey Neighbor!” received accolades as well.

“Her” is our current focus. It is a psychological thriller focusing on mental health disease by way of childhood trauma. This nineteen-page short depicts a psychological breakdown precipitated by unhealed childhood trauma taking control. It’s messaging alerts adults to the fact that no matter who you become in life, if you don’t heal from your early-life trauma, then your adulthood will always – in some way – contain elements of that trauma.

We’ve created an Indiegogo Campaign for the production of “Her”, which has been cast and crewed…just working to raise the $9k to make it happen. We offer some remarkable perks for contributions of $2 or more; yet are extremely grateful for any donation amount. The Campaign went live Dec. 17, 2024; we’re hoping to reach our goal by mid January. If we don’t, we’ll extend the Campaign as we are committed to making this film and doing our part to spread mental health awareness.

Here’s another quote for you: “If you want to understand the Adult you’ve become, communicate with the Inner Child you’ve abandoned” – another Tanya O’Quinn original which is so apropos to this film and its message.

As a Filmmaker and Producer, I’m always focused on the story – what is being told and how is it being told. I tend to look for ‘angles’ and ‘perspectives’ in a screenplay because I want to connect with ‘developed’ characters. The message that lies within the story is also a lure for me. With that being said, there is a lot more to come from me. There are two features I intend to produce (“The Last Getaway” – a horror, “The Raid (A Covid-19 Comedy), and two short films (“Who Got the Fish?” – a comedy about Black people and their food, and “Family Dinner” – a drama about mental health disease and those it affects).

…and yet, there is more.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m going outside of the city for my best friend:

I love Culver City, a small ‘town’, in L.A. County; I love the feel of downtown Culver City as well as Santa Monica. I love Long Beach, closer to the water though. Driving along the coast is a favorite of mine and Newport Beach attracts my attention every time I head south. The meditational garden in the Pacific Palisades is a great place to relax, chill, meditate. And the beach itself is always a great stop to make; some boardwalks are ‘more entertaining’ than others.

My favorite chicken wing spot is downtown LA; my favorite fish spot just happens to be up the street; and my fav ‘hood-joint’ (burgers) is in South Central LA…now if they (my guests) wanted Caribbean food, well we’re heading to Hawthorne!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Fiancé/Business Partner/Creative Partner is a strong driving force behind my persistence, growth, resilience, and success. She is an amazing, imaginative, and intuitive Creative Writer and has created content that complements my innate purpose as a Filmmaker: to visualize material that speaks to others, that motivates, enlightens, inspires, encourages…and of course, entertains. This industry is a challenge to invade (if you wish to make money); having her by my side eases the weight of some of those obstacles, thus enabling us to persevere and achieve/accomplish. Her name is Tanya O’Quinn.
