Meet Chaewon Suh | Filmmaker & Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chaewon Suh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chaewon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I remember one of the professors at Chapman said this in our orientation week, “Comfort zone is where your dream goes to die.” I try to think risk is opportunity to grow. As much as I put myself in a risk, in a discomforting situation, it means I’m leading to somewhere. I’ve made several choices in my life based on this view and it only made me move forward.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been lucky to always know what I want. I led my career based on what I feel most passionate and what I admire the most. So it has been somewhat consistent. I majored Film, TV, and Multimedia in Korea and worked in KPOP video industry for several years. I had great interest in music and dance, so I had best time directing performance videos and live shows. I can’t say it was easy, but I was grateful I can do what I love as a job. I take pride on my work and I hope poeple also perceive me as someone who always puts their heart on each project.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Maybe it is too obvious but, since I am Korean, I would take my friends to K-town first. It’s because K-town was one of the most impressive things in LA when I got here for the first time too! I would show how over the years Korean worked hard to settle in LA and broaden their community. It’ll make any Korean instantly feel close to LA. Next, I will take them to Hollywood boulevard. It feels like s very typical tour course, but I want my friends to see the Walk of Fame, Chinese Theater, and I want them to try a cookie dough desert which is in the corner of the street. Also, I’ll take them to Joe’s Pizza for lunch. After that, I will take them to one of the vintage markets in LA. At the end of the day, I must take them to Griffith Observatory to show the night light in LA. The dinner of the day will be Chipotle. Just because I like it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout to my friends and collegues who trusted me and encouraged me to challenge myself to this day. And most of all, my family who sends endless support. I would have never become who I am today without their love and support.
