We had the good fortune of connecting with Zina Gleason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zina, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Honesty and integrity are the most important factors behind my success and the success of my companies, Redefining Divorce and the ZBG Academy.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Redefining Divorce is a mediation firm that assists couples through amicable dissolutions and legal separations. The goal of Redefining Divorce is to help couples get through an extremely difficult time by providing guidance, compassion and affordable fees. We are successful because we are efficient and know how to navigate our clients through the murky emotional waters of the process. With our seasoned mediators, therapists, and financial advisors we are able to make this experience a bit less difficult and significantly less expensive.
We focus on quick resolutions by eliminating multiple parties and mediate between the couple only. The couple develops their own visitation schedule, decides how they want their property divided, negotiates support and makes any other arrangements they feel necessary for the final outcome to work for them. We give our clients the opportunity to make their settlement agreement fit their family rather than making their family fit the law.
We care about making sure this process is as painless as possible and we give our clients the tools to move forward in a healthy direction. We educate them on how to communicate, co-parent and find comfort in a newly designed life. Our number one priority is to make sure this experience doesn’t permanently break their spirits- this is especially important when children are involved. Our second priority is to make sure there is money left for each of their long term goals when the process is finished.
Since 2009, when I opened Redefining Divorce, I have had the opportunity to help support couples to reconcile when they believed divorce was the only option. I believe most couples can have successful marriages and usually need to learn different communication styles and better listening skills.
Redefining Divorce is successful because we don’t take clients on for financial reasons. We truly believe divorce should not be as expensive as it traditionally is which is why I created a flat fee program. I want clients to feel like they can reach out to me or my team without getting billed by the minute. Redefining Divorce is also successful because we focus on the most important part of divorce, the emotional process; Dividing assets and figuring out support is easy- it’s the emotional process that complicates the individuals divorce, present life and future relationships.
The process of opening and maintaining my company was relatively easy and I think that’s because its purpose and contribution to the world comes from a very humble place. My company serves to better relationships through tumultuous times and the way we do it is holistic and kind. I think if we were doing this work out of selfishness and greed, we would have faced many more obstacles and likely would not have been successful long term.
Lessons I have learned along the way- Give- Give your time, give your money and give your heart to everything you do and without expectations- it comes back around 10 fold. Things are rarely as they appear. We don’t know what a relationship looks like until we live within the four walls of that home. We interpret most information through jaded lenses from our childhood and experiences and until we work that out, we can’t really know what someone is trying to tell us since we manipulate the information through our own perspectives.
Kindness, humility and generosity goes a very long way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Downtown Fullerton is a very cool place. It if filled with restaurants, bars and great people. Bourbon Street has a great patio area that is usually busy. Stubricks, right next door to Bourbon Street has AMAZING food and incredible bar tenders who make the most amazing drinks. Roscoe’s is always busy, has great food and drinks. Palapas Tacos have the best tacos in town! We’d probably do the stairs at Hillcrest park and walk around the neighborhoods admiring the craftsman houses. There are a lot of fun trails in Fullerton, including the Fullerton loop that has a beautiful lake where people fish and play. We may take a trip down to Newport and go to Blue Water Grill off Lido street, That place has amazing cioppino. We can take a duffy out in Newport and zoom around there for a bit. Paddle boarding in Back Bay is always a good time. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Everyone I have met on my journey has in someway contributed to my success. The books I read and the stories I hear contribute to my success.
