We had the good fortune of connecting with Chandler Couillard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chandler, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Other people, mostly. I look to other models. photographers, musicians, designers, artists of all kinds, for insight and inspiration. It’s really special to build relationships with other creatives and watch ideas come to life – everyone’s mind is so different.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The projects I participate in are very diverse, not neatly put into one category – that is something I’m proud of. I try not to get stuck doing the same thing in every shoot – I spend a lot of time working on my facial expression, posing practice, and mindset for each shoot.
I would not be where I am today without the encouragement of others – so many photographers, fellow models, hair and makeup artists, vendors, that have worked with or recommended me. I owe so much to so many and just want to take a moment to thank everyone that has given me a chance, or helped me grow, in any way. The creative community can be such a lovely place.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, this is a great question! I’m a big fan of downtown Cary – some of my favorite spots include Taipei 101, Geluna Gelato, Pharmacy Bottle + Bev, and Annelore’s German Bakery (I actually have Celiac Disease so I can no longer enjoy this particular spot, but I still love to pick up treats for loved ones there).
Downtown Raleigh is a little too busy for me, honestly. Durham has some awesome stuff – the Durham Fruit + Produce Co (a multi-use space for artists of all kinds), Dame’s Chicken + Waffles, Bright Black Candles (I LOVE candles), The Slush (amazing alcohol infused slushies) – so much more, but those are some of my favorites.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people that deserve recognition and endless thanks for many things. My partner, Jo, deserves the entire world. He is my best friend, my biggest support and encouragement, and I love him endlessly. I owe so much of my creative success to Michael Betzner, a conceptual photographer who took a chance on me when I first started modeling – he became my mentor and one of my closest friends. Thank you both so much.
