We had the good fortune of connecting with Chani Friedman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chani, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
My business started out as a big risk. I had a secure, full time job that just wasn’t feeding my inner creative to it’s potential. So, I left my job without having a Plan B in mind, and just waited for my business to unfold organically. I believe that when we don’t pressure something into being, it opens up a space for it to be, to grow and to thrive. I knew I wanted to paint. I knew I wanted to be social. I knew I had an innate desire and skill to teach. And with all of those combined, with risk being the kicker, my Paint Party Events business blossomed.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe what sets me apart from other in this specific field of painting events is my innate ability to teach, in addition to having some knowledge about art and paint. Building up my business had its challenges, but I’d have to say, it was mostly enjoyable. If I were to focus in on one thing, I’d say a big chunk of the challenge was building up my clientele and working on not being desperate to book events. I believe that letting go of pressure allows organic growth and this was was a huge lesson I learned when I started out. All of that aside, and to focus on current events, the challenge I’ve been dealing with recently began with the onset of Covid. Working through it with the attitude of allowing things to play out, I quickly learned how to do my events virtually and what went from an, “Oh no!” turned very quickly into an “Oh yes!”
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take friends to El Matador beach, @TheBroadMuseum and @LACMA for sight seeing. Some of my favorite restaurants would be @charcoalgrillbar @meshuga4sushi and @lagondolabeverlyhills
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I was hired out to do my very first painting event by @blumaruby0 who hired me based on a painting event I did with friends. She trusted me fully, and from there I was able to promote myself as an Art Instructor who teaches paintings and leads painting events. It was a surreal moment for me to recognize the potential of what could be.
