We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Grant DeBose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, how do you define success?
I define success as doing what you’re passionate about no matter the money or how others view you. Often, we get wrapped up in monetary gains and attribute that to success. But in reality I believe success is deeper than just how much money a person can make. To me success is built through passion and the impact that we leave on others. Being able to do what you love while helping others is true success to me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am excited about my transition from sports into entertainment because I feel that I am able to express myself deeper than before. Transitioning was not easy for me at the beginning. It felt as if I was starting my life over. I was introduced to a life without sports and that change was hard to accept. I heard this quote one day and it said “Every athlete has two lives, one when they’re playing, and another when they finish.” that quote resonated with me and opened my eyes to the new possibilities that are ahead of me. I have been playing sports all my life and at one point that was all I ever knew. But now ever since the transition I have been able to discover more and learn more about who I am every day.

Throughout my journey I have learned to always bet on yourself. I knew that outside of baseball, there was more for me to do. I am very passionate about Mental health and helping others. With being in the entertainment business I am now able to tell stories about the different challenges people may go through and show them it does not matter what the obstacle is, it can always be overcome. When you take a look at my life you see a kid who battled day in and day out to turn his dreams into a reality.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to the last bookstore as one of the first locations. I love art and music, the last bookstore is located in DTLA, great place to visit if you’re big on literature, art, and music. The next place I would take them would have to be either fountain valley or skate express to go skating. Cannot visit LA and not go skating it just wouldn’t be right. After that I would take them to a few beaches and Hollywood giving them the true tourist adventure.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today if it was not for God and my support system. All the success that I have obtained has been because I am able to walk in my faith and trust that the path He has set for me. Walking by faith is not always an easy journey, which is why I am so thankful for the support system I have from family to friends and more. I also contribute my success to my mother who pushes me and supports me in all aspects of my life. Through every career decision I have made my mom has always had my back. She is truly a gift from God
