We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Tatum Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Pursuing an artistic or creative career can be a powerful and transformative choice, especially for someone who has experienced trauma and spent a significant portion of their life behind bars, like an African American male Charles Tatum Jr. Art has the potential to heal, empower, and provide a path to redemption. For someone who has faced a lifetime of trauma, engaging in artistic expression can serve as a cathartic outlet. Art allows individuals to process their emotions, confront their pain, and find inner peace. Through various mediums such as drawing, painting, or sculpting, one can channel their experiences into a powerful visual narrative that not only offers personal healing but also communicates with others who may resonate with their story. In prison, art can become a lifeline, providing solace and purpose amidst the difficult circumstances. Many incarcerated individuals have discovered the transformative power of art, using their God-given talent to transcend the confines of their physical surroundings. By honing their artistic skills, they can reclaim their identity, establish a sense of agency, and connect with their true selves beyond the prison walls. Beyond personal healing, pursuing an artistic or creative career offers the opportunity for growth, success, and financial stability. With dedication, talent, and perseverance, one can cultivate their skills, gain recognition, and build a fulfilling career. The art world is diverse and inclusive, providing spaces for underrepresented voices like African American artists to tell their stories and challenge societal narratives. For me, choosing an artistic or creative career is about reclaiming one’s identity, finding purpose, and transforming pain into something beautiful. It is a way to overcome the cruel tricks that trauma may have played on the soul and to inspire others who have faced similar challenges. Art has the power to heal, uplift, and create lasting change, not only for the artist but for society as a whole.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In the world of art, there is often an untold story behind each masterpiece.

My artistic journey began within the confines of my prison cell. It was during those long, solitary hours that I discovered the therapeutic power of art. With just a pen-and a piece of paper,I started to meticulously create African cultural themes, using fine, thin vertical lines. Each stroke of the pen became a symbol of my resilience and my desire to reclaim my identity.

Drawing became My’ sanctuary, a place where he could escape the harsh realities of my surroundings and delve into my imagination. Through my intricate lines, I sought to capture the strength and beauty of African culture, paying homage to my ancestors who had endured the horrors of slavery.

But it wasn’t just about creating visually stunning artwork for Me. It was about telling a story, my story. With each stroke of the pen, I aimed to depict the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of black people throughout history. I want My drawings to become a visual narrative, a powerful tool to educate and raise awareness about the ongoing struggles of black individuals in a world still plagued by systemic racism and oppression.

I have faced numerous challenges in sharing my work with the world. The art industry, like many other industries, has its biases and barriers. As a formerly incarcerated black artist, I encountered prejudice and skepticism. But I refused to let these obstacles deter me. I believed in the power of my art and the message it Carries.

With determination and resilience, I have sought out opportunities to showcase my work. I have participated in local art exhibitions, community events, and reached out to galleries and art institutions. Each time I enjoyed the experience

It is important to acknowledge and express gratitude for the individuals and organizations who have provided unwavering support, especially for someone who has experienced a lengthy incarceration and relied on their artistic talent to navigate through life’s challenges. First and foremost, my Mother deserves recognition for being a steadfast pillar of support. Despite the distance imposed by prison walls, she stood by my side, offering trust and providing a safe space for your art. Her belief in my talent and her willingness to preserve and cherish my artwork demonstrate her unconditional love and unwavering support. My brother also played a significant role in my journey. Despite any conflicts or disagreements, he saw something special in me and never abandoned me. Even in his passing, his support and belief in my artistic abilities continue to resonate. The bond I shared with him is a testament to the power of familial love and the enduring impact it can have on our lives. The organization Peer Kent and Drug Court played a vital role in my life. They not only provided guidance and assistance but also showed me the true meaning of giving back to others. Their support helped shape my perspective and instilled a sense of purpose in using my artistic talents for the betterment of others. In expressing my gratitude to these individuals and organizations, I acknowledge their significant contributions to my journey of healing, growth, and transformation. Their support and belief in me have been instrumental in shaping my artistic career and helping me find my path towards giving back to others.
