We had the good fortune of connecting with Chenchen Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chenchen, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
I’m a TV/Game trailer sound designer, but my goal is to step into the realm of film sound effects design and mixing. This ambition is not merely about career progression but a quest for artistic fulfillment and the thrill of seeing their cinematic vision come to life in a movie theater.

I craft trailers that leave audiences spellbound, craving more. I’m also on a relentless journey of self-improvement, constantly polishing my skills in anticipation of the ultimate dream: working on a feature film.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Gaining the trust of a sound supervisor or creative director is a significant challenge in the journey of a sound designer. Many of us start from a place where we’re relatively unknown in the industry, and the initial projects we get may not always go directly to clients. However, every project, even a test one, is an opportunity to showcase our skills and professionalism. It’s commendable that you appreciate the chance that the project gave you to engage in a conversation with the creative director. Building trust often involves consistently delivering high-quality work, being open to feedback, and demonstrating a genuine passion for your craft. Keep seizing these opportunities and showcasing your talent—it’s the key to earning the trust and respect of industry leaders.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast visiting Los Angeles, there’s a hidden gem that you absolutely must check out—The Bike Shed Co. Situated in the heart of LA, this place not only serves delicious breakfast and coffee but also boasts a store filled with British style motorcycle gears and stylish t-shirts. What’s more, their yard offers a convenient parking space for your motorcycle, making it a haven for riders looking to fuel up on great food, gear up in style, and enjoy the vibrant motorcycle community vibes.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In my career journey, I owe immense gratitude to Trailer Park Group for providing me with the invaluable opportunity to collaborate with exceptional clients and create compelling content. Ever since graduating from SCAD, I’ve had the privilege of diving into AAA game trailers, where I’ve consistently been entrusted by my peers to explore new creative avenues and push the boundaries of innovation. This support and trust have been instrumental in my growth as a sound designer, allowing me to continuously evolve and deliver immersive experiences that resonate with audiences.
