We had the good fortune of connecting with Chetna Mehta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chetna, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is like that wild and fun friend who inspires me to skinny dip in the sea and move my body fierce and free. I love and appreciate her; she adds spice to my life and has lead me to some of my most rewarding experiences like opening up to love, starting and growing my business, saying “no” because my heart isn’t in it even if I’m afraid of losing something, and investing in my self and others.

At the same time, she doesn’t carry the fears and traumas of my humanity so she doesn’t always understand why I hold back from spending thousands of dollars on PR for my business, or speak the truth about what I’m looking for in a partner on a first date, or tell a friend how their behavior hurt me. Risk doesn’t understand why she can be intimidating for valid reason. And that’s okay because that’s not actually her job. Her job is to be wild and free and to invite me along.

Other parts of me, my intellect, my fear, my intuition, my spirit guides and muses, all have their jobs too. And we can all sit at the table with risk and collaboratively deliberate on my choices.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work and play at the intersection of expressive healing arts, psychological education and ancient mysticism. I use art as a way to convey aspects of the human experience that connect us. Themes in my art include emotional intelligence (bringing to visual emotions like grief, hope and freedom), shadow work (exploring parts of us that we tend to want to hide), and interconnection with the earth.

Getting to where I am now was super easy and incredibly difficult at the same time. Easefulness has come from listening to my heart and trusting that when I am making choices in alignment with my love, peace and freedom, all the forces around me are supporting and conspiring to assist my success. When I get in my head and feel caught up in capitalist, patriarchal and oppressive value systems, I make it really difficult for myself and everything I do rarely feels adequate. The work and play is staying in connection with my heart and intuition to guide me in my business and life.

Practices that help me stay in touch with my heart and intuition include slowing down and minimizing distractions or external stimulation (that’s social media, TV, other’s opinions, etc.). Using my time to journal, meditate, be immersed in nature, leveraging plant medicine and eating a clean diet helps my mind and body stay clear to receive guidance from divine forces within and around me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people, organizations and resources to name here. The one that came to mind first was Yes! World, a non-profit organization that brings together changemakers from around the world to engage in circle, ceremony and ritual, to express from the heart, play, process and collaborate with one another in the arts for social change, in healing justice, as educators, leaders and affinity groups.
