We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheyenne Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cheyenne, how do you think about risk?
Okay we have all heard the cliche that life is all about taking risks, but it is the truth. Whether it be in your personal or professional life, there will always be risks that need to be taken to get to the next stage. When I started Sugar with Sass, I can say with confidence that it was the biggest risk I had ever taken. I had just graduated college and was ready to dive into the next step of my academic and professional career, but there was this thought in the back of my mind that I couldn’t ignore. I had to stop and think about the life and career that I truly desired. I was going for the obvious route of traditional success, but I felt that I was sacrificing my happiness in the process. That was a price that I just couldn’t pay. I thought about all of my options and kept circling around to the idea: passion over profit.

I was currently chasing profit but lacked passion. Sugar with Sass was my solution. The thought of leaving the academic path to start a completely different venture seemed too risky, and even absurd to some. I continued to contemplate the idea of starting my own business but battled with the idea of giving up my sense of security that was my long-term plan. Once I baked my first sugar cookie, the rest was history. The happiness that I felt while baking made the risk seem minimal. I wanted to create a career that allowed me to express myself and use my creativity to bring others joy. I continued to analyze my situation while being in some type of limbo between my decisions, but soon realized that risk of failing weighed less on my heart than the idea of not pursuing my dreams and passions.

Risks are one of life’s hidden treasures. What may seem like the biggest obstacle, might just be the next best experience. The risk was minimal compared to the sacrifice I would have made if I chose to not follow my passions. In my case the risky path was the most rewarding in the end. Don’t consider taking risks in a negative light but instead realize how courageous and rewarding it could be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s go on a tour of a few of my favorite places to eat and drink! For an early morning breakfast head over to Pappys for some of the best food you’ll ever have. The locals love it here and its always a crowd pleaser. to burn off the calories and keep the kids distracted you can head over to The Marketplace for some shopping and stop in at Rocket Fizz. Rocket Fizz has a retro feel while providing all of the sodas and candies you can dream of. For drinks I would head over to Camino Real Kitchen and test out their happy hour. They have a huge drink selection and so many amazing appetizers to try! Another local staple is Mossman’s Coffee Shop. They have been serving up their famous fish n’ chips for years, and you can enjoy those while you take the family bowling. There are so many other local gems in Bakersfield, but these are just a few for you to check out while you’re here!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My boyfriend has been my biggest support system along this journey of building Sugar with Sass. He has kept me grounded through this entire process and always reminds me exactly why I started. It’s hard to put exactly into words what all he has done for me, but he simply gives me the strength I need when I feel weak. He inspires me every day to keep moving forward and to never give up on myself. I can genuinely say he believes in me even when I have a hard time believing in myself.
