We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Bedoya and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Mindfulness. I wanted mindfulness to be the root of my business and my program. When I looked out at the music education industry, I noticed that there were some really good educators out there. I would find them on youtube, through their music, or by searching for production tips.
What was hard to find were actual educational programs, schools, or mentors that offer 1-1 guidance to an individual without costing a mortgage. So this makes learning production or making music an overwhelming endeavor.
After working with many of my friends that are talented musicians, they all had a similar chip on their shoulder- they devalued their art. I wanted to help them find that creative spark. This strengthened their confidence, which led to finishing their music and finally releasing it.
I believe this art is healing, music is medicine and we need more practitioners. I realized a few years ago that there are so many talented musicians out there, with gold on their hard drives, or a fire inside urging them to express and share their stories. The only problem is the education system doesn’t offer the support that musicians need, and social media causes most creatives to freeze in their tracks.
I want to demystify the production process and focus on the reason someone wants to make music. If I’ve helped one person feel good about their music, I know I’m doing the right thing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Once I saw people making music with loops, I knew that is what I was going to do. I thought the one-man band aspect was amazing. Best of all, it looked like so much fun. I dedicated myself to learning how I would achieve this sorcery. Would I beatbox? Would I use software? Where do I even begin?
It became daunting, almost unmanageable, everything you learn online isn’t specific to your particular needs, so you end up spending a lot of money either going to school or buying courses. I went to school and I bought the courses. Which amounted to years and years of school and teaching myself. It’s a long expensive road and it definitely helped but I always wished I could have someone that could listen to my goals, work with my equipment, and give me 1-1 guidance on my art. A true mentor.
I kept pushing, I kept finding mentors, and soaking in as much information as I could I would ask as many questions as I could. After applying what I’ve been learning, I noticed I was getting more questions and feedback on my own process and it eventually clicked that I’m meant to teach.
That which I needed, I will now provide.
Music is such a healing power in this world, and anyone who feels called to pursue it in some way deserves the mindful type of support their art needs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week in California, especially Orange County offers many opportunities for pretty much any activity. We would hit the beach, most likely Laguna or knowing my friends one of the local dog beaches. We’d go to a show probably a Bass Waffles event in LA, or possibly catch a Tiny Porch Concert in Strauss Ranch. For more water fun, we’d rent a duffy boat in Newport and catch a romantic sunset because that’s how best friends roll.
There are too many good food spots in Orange County, SushiDamu comes to mind to get some delicious sushi for dinner or Ponzu for a One Roll.
For a hard left turn, we’d go to Big Bear or Mammoth to snowboard or just enjoy the mountains. To just wear down my friend I would then take them to Disneyland and ride the Star Wars ride until it closes.
Let’s not forget a stop at In-n-out to end almost any of the nights.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents are top of the list. They believed in me throughout my life. My dad spent his life encouraging my music and my career. When he passed I was a year from graduating with my bachelor’s, and it really opened my eyes to what he gave to me. I’ll try to pass on my gratitude and support to others as he did with me.
I have amazing friends and mentors that have helped me along the way. Matt Borden of The Omen Room studios taught me real-world studio ways, and he’s always been a source of wisdom in the music world. My mentors at Artist Collective have shown me so much in such a short time, I’ll be forever grateful for their guidance. Zach G. has been a dear friend and has opened the doors to video game production for me which was an amazing experience.
My girlfriend and partner – Katie Rose Brunner. Through thick and thin she’s been my support when I was struggling or thriving. She is my muse.
