We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Andrew Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
A book that I’ve read very recently that has really impacted me is “The Art of War of Small Business” by Becky Sheetz-Runkle. I like it because it helped me find my center. It kept me disciplined when it came to my career and pushed me to work harder.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Voice Actor living in Los Angeles. For those who are unsure about what that is, it’s Acting, except you’re not in front of a camera or an audience. You’re in front of a microphone! You hear voice actors everywhere you go! From commercials, to cartoons, video games, the street crosswalk announcer, even the toys that you might get for your kids! One of the things that sets me apart from other voice actors is that I’m bilingual. I speak English and Spanish! Luckily for me, there’s a very large market for Spanish VO work! It’s almost as though I truly get the best of both worlds. I can be voicing a Goblin in English one day, then voicing a teenager in Spanish for a school commercial the next day! What I’m most proud of is being able to look back and see how far I’ve come. Knowing that I did what I wanted to do in the first place makes me feel as free as a bird! That being said, it wasn’t easy! Whether it be planning to move across the country, to taking various VO classes, or working a 9-5 job while pursuing your goals! Determination truly is the key to success. How bad do you want it? That’s what I ask myself every single day! Luckily for me, I still want it pretty bad!! Something I’ve learned along the way is that you can’t expect the work to come to you. You have to go to the work. Take the initiative, do the work, and test your limits! You are not entitled to anything, so stay on your toes and be present! Meet new people, try new things. You might be surprised at the skills that you learn along the way! If readers could get anything out of this, it’s that you can do anything you set your mind to! I’m a Puerto Rican kid from Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Even an islander like myself can go to the biggest entertainment capitol of the world and find success. Love what you do and do what you love. That’s truly the greatest advice I could give anyone pursuing their goals.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a big movie guy! The theaters in LA are top of the line places to go see new movies! Not to mention checking out live improv-shows like the Groundlings is a blast! You can also go to Flappers Comedy Club and enjoy some stand up! Occasionally, they’ll do a Voice Actors Stand Up night, where you get to hear your childhood cartoon voices tell you jokes! People like Bill Farmer (Goofy), Carlos Alazraqui (Mr. Crocker) or even new up and coming Voice Actors! If we’re talking about food, I can’t NOT mention “Mofongos” up in North Hollywood! It’s the best Puerto Rican food I’ve had since my abuela! (And that’s SAYING something!) Of course, if you’re new to LA, you GOTTA check out the Hollywood sign and the Walk of Fame! It’s an experience like no other! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my dad. He’s always taught me that there’s always a way to succeed. We can’t just sit down and let people tell us how to live our lives. But most importantly, “if you’re gonna go through with something, you better make sure you’re the best version of yourself that you can be!” His confidence has always been an uplifting motivator to get the job done. If he hadn’t taught me a lot of these life lessons, I’m not sure where I’d be today! Someone else who I think deserves recognition is my good friend, Alex Walker Smith. Another fellow voice actor who helped me advance further into my career in ways that I couldn’t imagine. I know that whenever I need help with a project, I can always count on him to be as honest and hardworking as possible. Not only do I see him as a great mentor, but as a great older brother.
