We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Ashkarian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, what are you inspired by?
I love this question!  We should ask each other this more, how many of us stop to think about what we are inspired by? For me, inspiration has many faces.  For example; a butterfly flying past me while stuck in traffic, cultures around the world, altruistic acts of kindness, my immigrant grandfather, the way music has the ability to make you feel, getting your hands covered in dirt from gardening or paint from making a masterpiece and lastly love, that love stuff is the reason I do anything.  The inspiration list could go on.  I make it a point to always be inspired, even if it is the smallest thing.  However, this is all on a good day.  How do you stay inspired on a bad day?  For me or anyone who is highly sensitive, as long as there is suffering in the world, I/we suffer too. I have accepted this ugly truth by having to extract inspiration out of unsuspecting places.  I paint my way out of the darkness with colors.  The key to finding it on a bad day is to be intentional, look for it.  My ability to create such beautiful pieces comes from all of these little sparks . In my opinion you can not be an artist without inspiration, they go hand in hand.  Therefore, I remain consistent on allowing life to inspire me, even through the bad.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

When I am not covered in paint, I am continuing to build my beauty empire. I own and operate a beauty salon in Torrance, CA.  We specialize in semi-permanent beauty treatments such as eyelash extensions and tooth gems. This year will be my 5th year in business which makes me proud and grateful. Hye Lash is a space I have created to unwind, gain confidence, have mini therapy sessions, and learn a new skill.  I teach the 10 years of experience I have to others who desire to do what I do.  What I think sets Hye Lash apart is, it’s more than just a beauty salon…real healing is taking place at the shop.  I have the privilege of hearing the stories that people hold on so tight, they are able to let go of some of that tightness. Things start to feel lighter, that is healing.  What do I want the world to know about my brand?  Well, in short there is nothing to know.  Hye Lash is an experience, something to be felt.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Some of my favorite gems in LA are:

The Huntington Library Botanical Gardens, any botanical garden really.

Eaton canyon has this beautiful little hike and at the end of it you find yourself gazing at a tiny, but mighty waterfall.

“Batcade” batting cages is one of my favorites.

As for nightlife, I like to dance the night away at the Abbey on occasion or chill on the rooftop of Petit Ermitage, it depends on my mood.

More often than not I just want to go eat so you will most likely find me at Raffis or Wabi On Rose, The G Lounge, or In N Out, duh!
